The oil in the lamp took fire and in a second the whole tiling was on fire, the burning oil falling on the floor getting the carpet on lire, and for a time the Doctor was fearful that the flames would get the mastery over him, but by heroio etl'ort he smothered them and thus pre vented a disastrous conflagration. This furnishes us another practical demon. slrntloti of the Impracticability of lining a lump with coal oil when It is lighted.
