8 THE TIMES, NEW BLOOMFIELD, PA.. NOVEMBER 5,1878. A a4iTH' ItOBtltl.ltV. Loss Nearly $3,000,000. The New York papers of Inst week give the following account of the robbery of tlio Mitnbnttnn Havings Bnnk in that city. The bugluis entered the janitor's room, hand culled him and his wife, and forced him to surrender the keys of the vault and the secret of the combination of the lock. They then entered the vault, where they remained neatly three hours, breaking open the tta(e and rilling it of a part of its contents. They carried away $3,747,700 in bonds and U.O00 In cash. Of the bonds $2,500,700 are registered and $108,000 are payable to the order of the institution. The bank bus decided to take the beuellt of the sixty day's act In order to prevent a disastrous run. Louis Wreckle, the janitor, is a littlo old man, of no physical strength, and of appar ently less courage lie has been over 20 years In the employ of the bank, and was implicitly trusted. His wife is a sufferer from heart disease, and Is mote helpless than her husband. The mother-in-law Is a feeblo old dame of 73 years, in her dotage. Tho bank employs as night watchman Daniel H.iley, residing at No. 189 Greene street. He went on duty its usual at 0 o'clock on Saturday eveuing, locked him self im.ido the bank, and remained on watch all night. At 0 unlock yesterday morning, accord jug to his statement made to the police, he went out of the Blocker street entrance to tho batik, locked the door behind him and proceeded up stairs to Werckle's apart ments, shutting tho street door, which closes with a catch after he had entered. He rapped with his club on"4Werckle's sitting-room door to awake him, and hav ing heard his response passed down stairs again and out, shutting the street door behind him. He walked to the corner of Broadway and; stood.there 10 minutes. There ha met and .'spoke to Officer Tully, who had been relieved at the corner of Houston street at 0 o'clock. .Ho then went homo. At that time, so far as ho knew, tho bank was all right. He saw no auspicious or other person about. It was Werckle's duty on being awakeucd, as doscribed by the night watchman, to respond by rapping on tho inside of the door, and to dress immediately and go down stairs to tho bank. Tliero was a third watchman, named Patrick Shovlin, a resi dent of Mulberry stroct, who was employed on Sundays to roliove Worckle. All three were provided with keys fitting the bank door and the Bleacher street ontrance to the second floor, but Worckle alor.o was outrus'.ed with the key and the combina tion of tho largo vault. Part of bis duty was toopen the vault and lay out the bank's books on the proper desks after having swept up and . dusted out tho offiua. Werkle's story is that he was awakened by Mealy rapping on his door. Ho went out of his bedroom and answered his knocks, and began to dress. About 0.10, hs ho was engaged in drawing on bis pantaloons, tho door of his sitting room suddenly and noiselessly opened, and seven or eight men walked in. They all wore masks. They seized and haudcuffed himself and his wife, and tied his mother-in-law in a sheet. The womoti began to shout, and be turn ed and told I hem to be quiet or the robbers would kill them. They thereupon subsi ded. One of t lio men took away his bunch of keys, and another, presenting a revolver at his head, ordmod him to give up the combination, lie said he did not have it. The robber icplied : "You lio, yon ; you open the vault every morning. Qivoit up, or I'll kill you." Worckle says he told them that even if he should comply it would be of no tte to them, as they would not be able to turn the knob of the doors. "You leave that to us," was the reply ; give us tho combination." Ucing again threatened he gave it. Four of tho gang then went down stairs, leaving three to watch himself and his wife and mother-in-law. After a long whilo, during which Wercklo says he heard tho pounding below distinctly, one or two of the robbers returned up staiis and whispered to his guards, and they all quit together. A few moments later he went out to the Bleeker Btreet side of the building and looked out of the windows, but could see no one. He then ran down stairs and gave the alarm.
