THE TIMES, NEW BLOOMFIELD, TA.. OCTOBER 29, 1878.
A Murderer et Large.
Allen C. Laros, the murderer of hta
father and mother and Moses Bchug, on
nged man, boarding with tbe Laros
family, mndo bin escape from the Harris
bmg Btnte Lunatlo Hospital last week. A
commission of medical experts having de
cided that he was insane, he was removed
to the Institution about a year ago. He
Riadully Improved under medical treat
mont, and the propriety of removing hlra
to Easton, Northampton county, and giv
ing Governor Ilartrnnft another opportu
nity to bang the murderer was discussed.
Laros was apprised of the contemplated
action of the authorities, aud took advan
tage of the first opportunity to escape, tbe
murderer having been allowed to walk
about tbe hospital grounds. All efforts to
capture the fugitive bavo thus far been
futile.
Laros was to have been batiged on
September 20, 1877, but the cxeoution did
not occur because of the report of the
Uommision of Lunacy. Should the fugi
tive be captured the Goveinor would no
doubt issue another warrant for the execu
tion of the criminal, as it is believed that
bis mind has been restored sufficiently to
justify such au action. Laros threw poison
into a cofl'ee pot about two years ago and
bis father, mother, Moses Skhug and all
tbe Laros family except Allen drank of the
cofl'ee and were made sick, but they all
recovered except the old people. Allen
confessed the crime, and stated that be
had comuiited it to obtain several hundred
dollars belonging to bis father and Moses
Schng. The money was found buried
near the Laios residence, where the mur
derer said he secreted it.
Dueling with Cowhides.
Boydton, Va., Oct. 15. One of the
most remarkable duels on record occurred
in this place to-day ..' Virginia has been
famous for all kinds of a Hairs of honor,
but it remained for the lion. A. Ilackett
and Col. II. W. Krouhmeir to inaugurate
a method of duelling up to this time un
known to the codo. Mr. Ilackett was
until recently the editor-in-chief of the
Mecklinberg Democrat, and Krouheimer
bis aEtociate, and now editor-iu-chicf.
The misunderstanding culminating iu this
afl'air of honor grew out of an article
written by Ilackett whilo editor of the
Democrat, in favor of inilatiou of the
currency, which bis associate bitterly
opposed and denounced in strong terms.
Ilackett on this account resigned his posi
tion on tbe paper, and in the last issue
Krouheimer, in a caustic articlo, bade bis
lute associate farewell. To-day it was
known on the street that the latter bud
expressed bis determination to cowhide
tbe former on Bight. Late iu tbe evening
Krouheimer was walking down the street,
accompanied by bis brother Benjamin,
when be was met by Ilackett, also accom
panied by one of biB brothers. Ilackett at
once made the attack, A. Ilackett and II.
W. Krouheimer using cowhides, Win.
Ilackett the butt end of a large pistol, and
Bon Krouheimer a knife. It is generally
understood that Krouheimer got the best
of the cowhiding, but be received several
severe licks over tbe bead from tbe ham
mer of the pistol. The cowhiders were
both severely injured. Chicago Times.
tSP An incident illustrating the ameni
ties of Oriental life is thus related by the
London Truth : "I wonder bow many
men on board our fleet in the sea of Mar
mora are aware that at tbe back of Prince's
island, not seventy years ago, the whole
harem of tbe Sultan Selim was drowned, to
the number of three hundred. The said
Selim bad been murdered by bis nephew
Moustnpha, who iu turn was murdered by
his brother Mahmoud. This last was
much attached to bis uncle Selim, and be
suspected that the women had aided
in bis uncle's murder, or, at all events,
had made no efforts to save bis lifo. Many
of them were quite young, and the barera
included French, Italian, and German
girls. According to the orders of this
ferocious barbarian, each one was tied up
in a sack, aud the next morning at day
break they were embarked iu barges from
tbe quays of the seraglio, and taken by the
eunuchs to the place appointed, when they
were successively thrown into the sea.
Their screams were beard miles away, and
some not ouly got out of tbe sacks, but
threw themselves into the water aud en
deavored to swim to shore. They were
overtaken by the guards and were killed,
either by being run down or by being
beaten on the bead with the heavy oars."
Bogus Certificates.
It is no vile drugged stuff, pretending to
be made of wonderful foreign roots,
baiks, &c", and puffed up by long bogus
certificates of pretended miraculous cures,
hut a simple, pure, effective medicine,
made of well known valuable remedies,
that furnishes its own certificates by its
cures. We refer to Hop Bitters, the purest
and best of medicines. See "Truths" and
"Proverbs," in other column. 44.
tS"" Three convicts of the camp near
Tallahassee, Fla., stole Paris green which
had been mixed with flour and bad it fried
into fritters aud ate it. They died in a
few hours. Tbe negro cook aud his family
narrowly escaped death from eating food
which had been cooked iu tbe same vessel.

t3F A correspondent of tho St. Louis
Globe Democrat asserts that there is no
security for life or property in Texas be
cause of " tho laxity of her courts, aud
the patent and clearly evident bribery
among some of ber Judges, District At
torneys, and jurors." This is a serious
'charge to make against the people and
officials of a great State, and, if it is true,
Texas must be in a very had oondition indeed.
A letter from Harvey co., Kansas,
says : Such has been tbe rush of immigra
