A boiled egg which Is done will dry quickly on the shell when taken from the kettle. The boiled eggs which adhere to the hell are fresh laid. After an egg has laid a day or more the shell comes oil" easily when boiled. A fresh egg has a lime-like surface to its shell. Stale eggs are smooth and glassy of shell. Eggs which have been packed in lime look stained and show the action of the lime on the surface. Eggs packed in brine a long time smell and taste musty. With the aid of the hands or a piece of paper rolled in funnel shape and held toward the light, the human eye cau look through an egg, shell and all. If the egg is clear and golden in appearance when held toward the light it is good : if dark or spotted, it is bad. The badness of an egg can sometimes be told by shaking it near the holder's ear, but the test is a dangerous one. Thin shells are caused by lack of gravel, etc., among the hens laying the eggs. Many devices have been tested to keep eggs fresh, but the less time an egg is kept, the better for the egg and the one who eats it. Catarrh. A writer in the Tribune says that this disease is curable, if the sufferer will persist in using the following; "The remedy is crushed cubeb berries smoked in a pipe, emitting the smoke through the nose ; after a few trials this will be ' easy to do. If the nose is stopped up so that it is almost impossi ble to breath, one pipeful will make the head as clear as a bell. For sore throat, asthma and bronchitis, swallow ing the smoke effects immediate relief. It is the best remedy in the world for offensive breath, and will make the most foul breath pure and sweet. Suf ferers from that most horrible disease, ulcerated catarrh, will find this remedy unequalled, and a month's use will cure the most obstinate case. A single trial will convince any one. Eating the uncrush ed berries is also good for sore throat and all bronchial complaints. After smoking do not expose yourself to cold air for at least fifteen minutes. The berries are perfectly harmless. They can be procured at any drug store, and you can crush them yourself." Putting up Cucumbers. This is the way to put up cucumbers to have them remain firm and good without using poison to accomplish it : Wash your cucumbers, taken fresh from the vine, in clear, cold water ; put them in a porcelain kettle, with just euough water to cover them, and add sufficient salt to season the cucumbers. Let them remain on the stove till hot, but not boil ; then take them out and drain till perfectly dry. Put them into bottles and cover them with boiling vinegar of the best quality, to which has been added some red pepper, some mustard seed, a little horse-radish, and sugar just to suit the taste. Cucumbers prepared in this way, if good vinegar is used, will keep a whole year, if properly sealed up. Home Influence. Do you ask what will educate your son? Your example will educate him; your conversation with yoiir friends; the business he sees you transact; the likings and dislikings he sees you ex pressthese will educate him. The society you live in will educate him ; your domestic circle will educate him ; aboveall, your rank, your situation in life, your home, your table, will educate him. It is not in your power to with draw fom him the continual influence of these things, except you were to with draw yourself from them also. Educa tion goes on at every instant of time; you can neither stop it nor turn its course. What these have a tendency to make your child, that he will be. A Good Cement. For stopping holes in castings, or for covering scars, a useful cement may, it is said, be made of equal parts of gum arable, plaster of Paris, and iron filings, and If a little finely pulverized white glass be added to the mixture, it will make it still harder. This mixture forms a very hard cement that will resist the action of fire and water. It should be kept in its dry sUte aud mix ed with a little water when wanted for jse.
