Years ngo I discovered tlint nlocs In
line powder is n spoclflo for the destrus.
tlon of lice ou nil nnlninlH, mid as It lias
no poisonous properties, Us intense
bitterness being wbnt kills, H nan bo
freely applied, and as It has to be used
In a dry state, Its application is as safe
in cold as in warm weather, consequent
ly is free from nil objections urged
against other remedies. My regard for
the comfort of animals and the Interests
of their owners induce me to publish
this for the benefit of all concerned, and
us this Is the season when these parasites
are usually most numerous and annoy
lng, an opportunity isaff'orded for testing
its unpnralled merits.
Directions : PHI a large common pepper
box with the powder and sprinkle freely
into the hair, on the neck, back, Bides,
and rump of the animals infested, and
rub it thoroughly through the hair and
on the skin with the ends of theflngers;
leave It undisturbed for a week. Then
card or curry thoroughly nnd Hpply as
before, and so continue at intervals of a
week, until there Is not a living parasite.
I have used and recommended this ex
terminator in numerous cases without
a failure, and two different applications,
if thoroughly made, generally suffice.

How to Plow.
In his address on " Plowing1' before
the state board of agriculture of Con
necticut, Professor Stockbridge said :
" There are two kinds of soil on every
man's farm the agricultural soil and
the subsoil. The agricultural soil may
be two Inches deep, or It may be nine,
but it is not twenty feet. It is no deeper
than the air can penetrate. If the agri
cultural soil is too shallow, it may be
gradually deepened by lifting an inch of
the sobsoil at each plowing, bringing it
up to the air and enriching it with
manure. Our agricultural society com
mittees, by their premiums for Btnooth,
shiny, fiat furrows, have done the com
munity great harm. Huch plowing as
oftenest takes the premium is the- very
poorest kind of plowing. The soil is
best plowed when it is most thoroughly
crushed, twisted and broken with the
sod well covered. On some kinds of
land I would have the furrows lapped
an inch, as the Canada farmers plow.
Let the air and water have a chance to
circulate underneath the surface. Light
lands, however, should have a flat bur
row ; we wish to make such lands more
compact."
Information for Farmers.
Corn cobs are said to be an excellent
absorbent to place behind cattle in
stables ; the cobs soak up a great deal of
liquid and soon decay in the manure
heap, adding their own substance to in
crease its fertilizing value.
An infallible remedy forsmut in wheat
is to soak the seed wheat in brine, and
then dust it with unslacked lime. This
is said to be a sure remedy.
Among wheat-producing States Iowa
takes first rank, Minnesota second, Illi
nois third, and Wisconsin fourth. Ohio
raises the most corn and oats ; Pennsyl
vania leads them all on rye ; California
on barley, and Illinois on oats and corn.
Uncle Jesbie G. Hart says that be has
never known this remedy for horse colic
to fail : Take a tablespoonful of lard
not too soft and place on it about as
much red precipitate as will lay on the
point of a pocket-knife blade, then give
it to the sick animal, and if it fails to
relieve him in fifteen minutes rejeat

crat. Apple Vinegar.
The surest way to procure pure apple
vinegar, says Scribncr"1 MuntMy, is to
make it at home. You will And it an
easy matter to save all the paringh for
this purpose. Put the parings in a stone
jar and add just enough warm water to
wet them thoroughly. Cover with a
coarse piece of muslin and setin a warm
place until the fermentation begins.
Then strain first through a coarse
sieve ( this will remove the skins,) then
through a piece of toweling. After this
has settled, drain it off into a stone jug.
Tie a coarse rag over the mouth to keep
out the insects without keeping out the
air. Stand in the kitchen near the
stove, until sour enough for use. Almost
before you are aware of it, you are sup
plied with good vinegar, without its
having cost anything except a little
labor. . . i ..
