rjAyoung man was arreBted In a
New Jersey town a few days ago on the
charge of carrying concealed weapons.
On searching his person a bowle-kulfe
was found in each boot-leg,a seven-shooter
lu his Inside coat pocket, a cavalry
sword slid down his back, a " billy" in
each coat-tull pocket, and a dagger up
each coat sleeve. That was all. lie was
discharged when he explained that he
wns on his way to Princeton College, to
enter the Freshmen class, and had
merely taken some precautions to pro
tect himself from the attacks of the
Sophomores.
4a-
O " Tom, why did you not marry
Lucy V"
" Oh she had a sort of hesitation in
her speech, and so I left her."
" A hesitation in her speech 1 I never
heard of that before. Are you not mis
taken V"
" No, not at all ; for when I asked her
if she would have me, she hesitated to
say yes, aud so 1 cut her for another
girl."
63T The following pathetic note was
picked up on a Heading street : " My
dear Jane I hope you ain't mad because
I didn't laff at you when you laflt at me
last evening at the post oflls. I ain't
prowd, dear Jane, but I have got a bile
under my arm, and I can't laff as I used
to, as Heaven is my Judge. Yours truly,
Henry."
gig" A red-nosed reprobnte,whose ward
robe would only have been merchanta
ble by the pound, entered the corner
grocery, and planting an empty soda
water bottle on the counter, said:
" Gimme some alcohol to clean silver
with." "All right," responded the
dealer in wet goods, " let's see your
silver."
UiT There is a good story in Planche's
Memoirs,, told by Rogers, of a man who
got very drunk at a country house, was
tarred and feathered, and put to bed. He
woke, still drunk, in the morning, reel
ed over to the looking-glass, and ex
claimed, " Become a bird, by Jove?"
03? A Boston paper says : " A butter
fly was caught at the South End yester
day." It may be all safe enough to
catch a butterfly at the south end, but
when you go to grab a wasp, you had
better catch it at the northeasterly end,
shifting westerly toward the head.
A young lawyer, who had been
admitted about a year, was asked by a
friend: "How do you like your new
profession V" The reply was accom
panied with a brief sigh to suit the oc
casion : " My profession is much better
than my practice."
A pious old Boston gentleman
observed boys playing marbles on the
common Sunday. " Boys," he says
sternly, " do you know what day this
Is ?" One of the boys yells out: " Here
Bill ; can you tell this man what day
this is he don't know." End of the
missionary enterprise.
63" A clergyman, applying for an
appointment, was asked : " I hope, sir,
you drink in moderation?" "Well,
I try as much as possible to drink like
a beast." " Like a beast 1" " Yes, I stop
when I have had enough, and that is
what a beast always does.
tj- They don't wait for leap year In
Java, but if a young woman is in want
of a husband she places an empty flower
pot on top of the front porch as a sign.
If some of our young women lived in
Java, wouldn't they sling out the flower
pots? pJ3" You have a very ungainly walk,"
said a gentleman to his friend, " but I
hope you won't take oiTence at my
telling you so." "Not at all," replied
the friend ; " you will always find that
a man of my gait never takes a fence."
fir The mule has other eccentricities
than dynamlne power In his hind legs.
One was the means of sending Dr.
Williams, colored, of Georgia to serve
forty years in the State prinon Just be
cause the doctor stole him.
63" A comparison. ' I never knew
anything so bad as the short weight you
give me for my money," complained a
debtor to his grocer.
"Only the long wait you give me for
mine I" was the reply.
tir A chap dreamed for twenty con
secutive nights that he was out carriage
riding, and he couldn't Imagine any
reason for the fact until be discovered
that his bed was a little buggy.
H3" When Ebenezer Ward.of Oshkosh,
refused to have the ceremony performed,
his girl promptly knocked htm down la
other words, she razed her Ebeneier.
