The Juniata Valley Camp Meeting
will commence at Newton Hamilton, on
the 13th of August and continue ten

Over coats and stoves were In great
demand on Saturday last. Snow equals
and hail storms were frequent during
Friday In other parts of the county, and
in this place on Saturday.
A young man named Elmer Mauchlin,
a resident of Marysvllle, was arrested on
Friday last, on the charge or obtaining
a suit of clothes of aHarrisburg clothing
dealer under false pretense.
A three year old daughter of Mayor
Patterson of Harrisburg was suddenly
Saralyzed in the tongue and face a few
ays ago, so that she could not move or
speak.
John Hippie, railroad night police
man at Harrisburg depot, who sustain
ed an injury some time since, has be
come insane, and has been taken to the
asylum.
A number of engineers and firemen of
freight engines were discharged from
the employ of the Pennsylvania railroad
co., recently. The light shipments of
freight Is reported to be the cause.

' Mr. D. D. Boas, of Harrisburg was al
most instantly killed on Wednesday last
by being thrown from a carriage, in
turning a corner too suddenly, while
driving rapidly.

Cumberland county. No wonder times
are hard when so many people hunt ot- ,
lice rather than work.
MVTr. J. H. Cumbler of Newport was so
unfortunate as to let a molasses barrel
fall on his leg on Wednesday last, badly
breaking his leg and mashing his foot.
The doctor fears the knee is so badly
damaged that the leg will be stiff.
J. A. Work & Bro., publishers of
The Token of Progress, Baldwin, Dau
phin county, have changed the name of
the paper to The ' Weekly Item, dropped
the patent outside and otherwise im
proved the appearance of the publica
tion. One evening, near dusk, about a week
ago, a full grown pheasant flew with
great velocity into the bouse of Mr. John
Peck, of Germany, and was' captured
but liberated the next morning. It is
presumed that something was in pur
suit of it, and in effecting an escape, it
sought this dwelling for protection.
Last week, about two and a half bush
els of very fine, large, fresh fish, were
found in the public road in Germany.
By apparent indications they had only
been caught the previous evening. No
one can conjecture how they got there,
unlets they were, in some way, lost by
some fisherman.

dead when discovered. The child was

Badly Cut. A young man named

rible cut on the eye on Wednesday last,
which may perhaps injure the sight.
In cutting off a sapling it sprang up and
knocked his axe up, inflicting acutex4
tending from over the eye down on to
the side of his face.
( County Superintendent. On Tuesday
last, 143 out of 180 School Directors the
number on the roll of the County met
at the Court House in this borough, to
elect a County Super In ten (Tent of Com
mon Schools of Perry county, to serve
three years. The Convention was or
ganized by the election of Chas. ('.
Brandt, Esq., of Greenwood twp., Pres
ident; Wm. J. Stewart, of Duncannon,
Secretary and Thomas S. Veltman, of
Tuscarora twp., and Wm. C. King, of
Penn twp., as Assistant Secretaries,

On the sixth ballot Mr. Wentzell was

rawn. On the seventh ballot Mr.
Edgar had 63 and Mr. Fahnestock had
78 votes, which was a majority of the
votes cast. Mr. F. was then declared
elected County Superintendent.
The Interest manifested, was greater
than on any similar occasion in this
county. The salary of the Superin
tendent is reported to be $1000 per year.
Democratic Convention. The delegates
elected last Saturday, met in the Court
House on Monday for the purpose of
nominating a County ticket. The fol

Kansas Letter.
A subscriber in Kansas writes us as
follows, under date of May 6lh :
Mr. Editor i I left Duncannon, Perry co.,
Pa., March 11th, and arrived at the city of
Lawrence, Kansas, the 13th. I was pleased
with this country and very much surprised to
And such good soil here and the land so cheap.
The wheat here beats all that I ever saw and
a large crop Is expected. It is all In heads
and some four feet In height harvest here will
commence soon.
Corn Is not so good In the start. Borne was
planted near the middle of April but It look
as If It will not amount to much. What was
planted later, Is up but the Stars, or Black
birds are are so numerous here that they pull
it all up.
I And lots of Pennsylvania folks here but not
one Penna. paper among them. I conld not
do without a borne paper and think every family
should take one paper. I am certain that I

present time.

Cumberland County. We copy the fol
lowing from the Cumberland county
papers of last week :
About ten panes of stained window
glass were broken In the M. E. Church
at Shlppensburg last week, from the
effect of blasting stone.
A bull raised by Mr. Cramer, of Hope
well twp., weighing eighteen hundred
pounds, was shipped from Newvllle last
week.
Mr. James M'Culloch, of Penn twp.,
report says, lost three horses by a singu
larly fatal and contagious disease, which
is prevailing in that neighborhood.
Mrs. Michael Lelily died suddenly at
her residence, on West Louther Street,
on Monday afternoon. She was well
advanced in years.
The whole number of schools In Cum
berland county at the close of the school
year, ending June 1, 1877,was231 ; whole
number of teachers.235 ; average number
of scholars attending school, 6,629; total
expenditures, $84,236.76.
On Thursday night last, Mr. David
M'Creary, of Shippensburg, stopping at
the National Hotel in Chambersburg,
made a narrow escape from death by
suffocation. On retiring for the night
he blew out, Instead of turning off, the
gas jet. The smell of the escaping gas
did not attract attention until about ten
o'clock Friday morning, when an en
trance was made into a room by a
window. The Local says Mr. M'Creary
was found lying on the bed unconscious
from the eilect of the gas and in a
dangerous condition. Medical aid was
at once summoned and every means
resorted to for his relief, by which, at
thiswriting.be is slowly recovering,
and is considered out of danger.

Shooting Match for a Mule. A number
of marksmen throughout the county
are interested in a prospective shooting
match for a valuable mule which is to
take place In the suburbs of New Bloom
field on Thursday, the 23rd day of May.
Competition is open to marksmen in
adjoining counties, and the distance to
be shot will be determined upon by those

County Sunday School Convention.
The executive committee of the County Bun
day School Convention met In Ickesburg, on
Monday, April 22nd, and arranged a pro
gramme of exercises for theConventlon,whlr.h
will hold Its tenth annual session In the Re
formed church, at Ickesburg, Wednesday and
Thursday, May 22nd and 2Drd, 1H78. The
opening session will take place at 10 o'clock
A. M., on Wednesday.
All persons contemplating attending the
Convention will please notify Mr. Samuel Lig
gett, Ickesburg, at an early date, and places
of entertainment will be provided.
The condition of the work before us demands
that this Convention be thoroughly practical,
and that every part of our county be fully
represented by active and aealous workers.
That this may be accomplished let each school
elect delegates to the Convention. Forms for
superintendents' reports have been sent to the
superintendents whose addresses we have and
all who have not been supplied will please
send In the name and address on a postal card
