During the late rebellion, a Ron of the Emerald Isle, hut not hlmsi'lf green, wag tuken up ( for ho was at the time down) near Mannssns Junction, hy a Confederate scouting party. He wore no special uniform of either party, but looked more like a spy than a volunteer, and on this ground was arrested. " Who are you y what Is your name? and where are you from ?" were the first questions put to him by the armed party. Tat rubbed his eyes, scratched his bead and answered. "Begorra, glntlemen, these is ugly questions to answer, and before I answer any of them I'd be after axlu' ye by yer lave the very same thing." " Well," says the leader, " we are of Bcott's army, and belong to Washing ton." " All right," said Pat, "I knowedyou was glntlemen, for I am that same. Long life to General Bcottl" " Aha 1" replied the scout, " now, you rascal you are a prisoner I" and be seized Pat by the shoulders. " liow is that are we not friends r" Inquired Pat. " No," was the answer. "We belong to General Beauregard's army." " Then ye Uild me a He, my boys, and thlnkln' it might be so, I told ye another. Now tell me the truth, and I'll tell tbe truth, too." " Well, we belong to the Btate of South Carolina." " Bo do I," promptly replied Pat; "and to all the other States of the country, too; and there I'm thinking I beat the whole of yez. Do you think I'd come all the way from ould Ireland to belong lo one State, when I bad a right to be long to tbe whole of them r" Pat was taken to camp, but as nothing could be made to appear against him, be was discharged. The Wrong Man. In the .city of Glasgow, late one night, an Irishman entered a crowded inn and asked for a night's lodging-He was told of tbe crowded condition of the inn, and that there was no hope of obtaining a bed unless he consented to pass the night with a negro. He, wearied by a day's travel made no- objection; and having dispatched bis supper, he was soon sleeping by the side of bis " strange bed-fellow," having left stringent orders with the landlord to awaken him at daylight, as he wished to depart on an early train. i Now the landlord seeing the raw con dition of his guest, determined to have tome fun at his expense. Bo repairing to the bedroom with a few of his fireside cronies, when tbe Irishman's snores sounded loud and long, he carefully but completely blackened bis face. In the morning the Irishman accord ing to his agreement, was awakened and finding It already late, be determin ed upon immediate departure. " Would be not wait for breakfast V" tbe landlord aiked. "No!" " Would he have some water to wash 't" " No I" and away he went. He bad not proceeded far before his eye was attracted by bis image in a mirror, which stood in a large show window. He 8 topped, and gazed, and was entirely perplexed, until he solved tbe problem satisfactorily in this wise. " Faix I" he exclaimed, " they've awak ened the wrong man I" C3S" A young man from Syracuse brought a couple of telephones and a cord of wire rope to Borne last week, and in the evening he went around to a house where a girl lives, and whistled softly until one of the upper windows was opened as he expected it would be. Tben be threw one of tbe telephones up in tbe window and whispered into the other instrument: " Are you there, darling ?" " Yes I'm here, and If you'll wait till I get my boots on you'll think you have been elected for the next world by 60,000 majority." He had hit the wrong window. 0 A collier lad going home to his dinner one day, and seeing a lump o' beef among bio kail, asked his mother where she bad " gotten sic a grand den nertheday." "Frae Providence," re plied bis mother. " O I, mKher," said he, "yer awfu' new-fangled, yer aye gettin' acquent wi' somebody." C3""My bretbern," said Swift in a sermon, " there are three sorts of pride of birth, of riches, and of talents. I shall not now speak of the latter, none of you being liable to that abominable rice." t&-" Have you found a verdict V" said a judge to the foreman of a jury. " No your honor: we have hunted in every corner of the room and there isn't one there."
