THE TIMES, NEW BLOOM FIELD, lA. AHtlL 2, 1878.,
A Daring Escape.
f.att week one of the most dnrlnir Ipaps
ou record m made by George Glen, a
prisoner held for burglary, at the Central
Police Btation. The court room was' on
the fourth floor, counting the basement as
one etory. Ou the eattt side there Is a
ftinall ante-room, in which prisonous are
kept dining the time between the opening
of the court and their respective trials.
There Is no granting to the window, and it
is fifty feet to the solid pavemcut below,
lieneath it is an iron fence presenting a
row of pickets, on which any one falling
would be almost certain to be impaled.
Glen was in the room with two other
prisoners, no officer being present. lie ex
pected to be called soon for trial on three
charges burglary,larceny and assault and
battery. Glen said to the other prisoners,
" I am going to get out of this." He
hardly said it before he threw off his over
cont, and pushing up the sash, sprang on
the window sill. His horrified companions
called out : " Hold on, you will be killed."
41 It is as well that way as any," said Glen.
Hiding to his full height and grasping the
bottom of the sash, he placed his left foot
on the outermost end of the stone, and by
a desperate effort swung bis right arm and
foot out toward a grated window that wns
some five feet to the north.
Quick as a cat be caught an iron of the
grating, but to do so was compelled to slip
his left hand from the sash, and depend ou
a precarious hold of the window frame.
His right foot struck the edge of the other
window, and then, by nn effort of muscle,
t he drew hlnmelf clear over to the other
window. Just to the north of this second
window a water pipe of large size ran
down in the angle formed by the junction
of the main Btatlon with one of the prisons.
Grasping this between his knees, Glen let

He had hardly touched the stone step at
the bottom when he made a dart Into a
rear door of Zellchan's saloon, and dashed
into an alley by an opposite door, and ran
into Loni street with the speed of the
wind. The jump and descent occupied

Whom Shall We Trust?
When afflicted with a complication of
-disorders, and the limited resources of the
family physician have been exhausted with
out benefit, the all important question is,
whom shall we trust? Many physicians
are bidding for the patronage of this class,
and it becomes the afflicted to thoroughly
examine into a physician's claims, and
know upon what they are based, before
trusting him. R. V. Piorce, M. D., of
Kuffalo, N. Y., is one of the most success
ful and widely known of authors and phy
sicians tn America. He has recently erect
ed a Grand Invalids' Hotel, in Buffalo, at
the enormous expenso of nearly half a
million dollars, it being the most complete
and elegant sanitarium in tho world. Dr.
Pierce has originated a system of diagnosis
by cases without seeing the patient. This
rcientifio system is fully described in his
Common Sense Medical Adviser, which is
sent to any address on receipt of $1,50.
