Mr. Gaines' Alligator Story.
Mrs. Oalnea, surrounded ly an inter
ested group of listeners In the parlor of
tbe hotel, was laughing and carrying on
as merrily as a girl of sixteen, telling
strange anecdotes of her most strange
and romantic career. ' ' ' i
" Is that so V" said a person in the,
circle repeatedly. ' .
" I never heard any one say ' is that'
so?' without thinking of an alligator
story," said the little woman. " Have'
any of you ever heard ,itV" Well a
credulous stranger was going down the
lied river in the small packet that navl
gates the stream. The man ensconced
himself in the pilot-house and kept up a
continual volley of interrogatlves. i t
"Are there many alligators in this,
stream stranger?"
"Hundreds of them ; ludeed, I may,
say millions of them 1" t
"Is that so stranger?"
" Never told a He in my life, sir. One
time we were running a race, and every.
thing wag excitement. To our surprise
the other boat passed. " Throw over
tbe lines said the Captain." The lines
were thrown overboard and the alliga- ;
tors toek the lines and they Just' made,
tracks, and they shot ahead of the other,
boat and run our boat down the stream
so fast that in five minutes we were out ,
of sight."
"Is that so stranger?"
" Never told a lie in my life. Another
time, the boat struck on a bar. We
worked and worked, but she didn't
move a peg. The lines were tossed into
the water, and the alligators seized them,
and drew us off as the skin on a boiled
potato."
"Is that so stranger?"
"Never told a lie in my life. One
time all the alligators got sick and were
about to die. " Throw over the medi-'
cine," said the Captain. The medicine
chest was emptied into the river ,aud the
alligators all got well."
" Is that so stranger ?"
" Never told a lie in my life. After a
while the Captain got sick and died, and
the alligators held a meeting, and adopt- .
ed resolutions to wear mourning for,
thirty days. Each alligator clapped a
chunk of mud over his right eye, and
the meeting adjourned."
" Is that so stranger ?"

and dramatic manner brought down the
