Several Biviart hailstorms helped make
up the variety of the weather on Thurs
day last.
A land slid, occurred in Juniata coun
ty, on Wednesday Inst which detained
trains for several hours.
The pair of horses stolen from Mr.
Miller in Juniata county, have been re

A wheel came off the Philip Auker's
stage a few days ago, causing him much
trouble and scaring his passengers. The
Rccldent happened when only a short
distance from Montgomery's Ferry.
A son of John Stambaugh was kicked
by a horse while at a sale on Wednesday
last. Fortunately he was so close to the
animal that the blow did not hurt him
much, but the fall knocked him insensi
ble. On Saturday aweek, eggs had a very
sudden fall. About four hundred dozen
which were in Jerry Thompson's mar
ket wagon dropped out as his wagon up
set when a short distance below Ickes
burg, on his way to Newport. The occu
pants of the vehicle were not hurt.
On Monday of last week Mr. Jonas
Totter, of Centre twp., attempted to put
on too much style in turning around in
the square at Newport, and in conse
quence upset his vehicle, dumping him
self and companion into the street.
Fortunately neither were much hurt.
The doings of the recent County In
stitute have been published in pamphlet
form. A County Superintendent who
will get his job printing done at offices
outside of his own county, when belter
work could be done at home is evidently
not much interested in home enterprise.
Mr. Samuel Tressler on Monday last
while in a boat on the Buffalo creek in
Juniata twp., lost his pole, and came
near being washed over the dam. Finally
he thought of an old tin basin by means
of which he was enabled to u pull for
the shore." He made a narrow escape.
A Spring twp., correspondent says:
Coal meetings have been held occa
sionally all the past winter, but the
company have only operated in their
mine a few days since last fall. Wm.
Foose has on his own responsibility, re
cently sunk a shaft in search for coal on
his farm to the depth of about 00 feet.
Several miners from Shamokin have
been there prospecting, who report that
the indications for coal in that section
are good.
Take Notice. In asking a change in

The Hogestown Select school will open

Ready for Business. H. L. Hohen
shildt, Esq., the new landlord at the
Eagle Hotel in this borough, has got
located and is now ready for business.
This hotel is pleasantly situated, and no
doubt under the management of the
new proprietor will be a popular stopping
place. We have no doubt that the
'Squire will get his share of the public
patronage and will deserve it too.
Got Very Wet. Mr. David Hollen
baugh, of Juniata township, was a few
days ago engaged in putting up flood
gates in the creek near Milford, in a
boat belonging to George Raffeusberger.
By some means Dave got his boat In
the rapids, and the next moment be was
floundering in the water, blowing like a
porpoise. He succeeded in safely reach
ing the shore however, and made a bee
line for home, and dry clothes, feeling
that if it was a Jkc, It was no dry one
at any rate.

An Almost Fatal Jump. An employee
of the Pennsylvania railroad company
named Saltzman, residing on Derry
street, east Harrisburg, and who Is em
employed as a car cleaner, made a nar
row escapo from receiving fatal Injuries,
yesterday, under the following circum
stances: He got on the way passenger
train west, at the depot, with the inten
tion of stepping from it at the round
house, above Herr street, when the
train reached that point. As it neared
the round house it had attained a tolera
bly high speed, and in attempting to
jump oft", Mr. Saltzman was hurled
through the air, and completely turned
over, striking the ground violently, cut
ting his head severely and injuring one
of his hands. His wounds were dressed
by the company's physician, after which
he was removed to his home on Allison's
hill. Patriot of the 13th inst.
Shodklng Burning Accident. An acci
dent of a horrible nature occurred about
eleven o'clock yesterday forenoon, at the
residence of Mr. D. Freed, who resides
In the frame row at Mucnch's brick
yard, on the east side of the canal, near
ly opposite Bailey's central Iron works,
between State and Herr streets. Both
Mr. and Mrs. Freed were absent from
home at work the latter at a house on
Pennsylvania avenue and left their
eight children in charge of their son
Johnny, who is eleven years old. About
the hour above stated Johnny under
took to start the fire in the cook Btove,
and for that purpose procured the coal
oil can, the other children standing
around the stove watching the opera
tion. Ncsooner had the oil come in
contact with the hot coals than a ter
rible explosion occurred, and the blazing
oil was thrown around the poor children
in every direction, setting their clothes
on fire. Ella, a little girl aged a years,
received the greater portion of the con
tents over her clothes, and in an instant
her dress was in a blaze. The oldest boy
seized hold of her and dragged her out
of doors and threw her into a pond of
water In the rear of the house, and suc
ceeded in extinguishing the flames, but
not before the little sufferer was shock
ingly burned about the Dice, breast, arms
and body, down to the very feet, Inhal
ing the flames and rendering her case
most likely a fatal one. The boy John
was badly burned while trying to save
his sister.
Martha, the baby, 18 months old, was
lying on the floor, near tho stove, when
the explosion took place, and the child's
head and left sldo were fearfully burned
and blistered by the burning oil. Em
ma, another llttlo girl eight years old,
In her endeavors to smother the flames
had her hands severely burned. None
of tho other four were injured In the
least. Drs. A. L. Alstead and Jacobs,
of this city, was summoned to tho scene
and did all In their power to relieve the
unfortunate llttlo sufferers, but their
efforts to save the baby and the six year
old, Ella, will probably be of no avail.
The two children were pronounced to be
In a dangerous condition late lust night
and the Impression was that the baby
ami Ella would not survive their Inju
ries till this morning. Patriot of J 'fh.
Killed and Thrown Into the River. On
Tuesday last tho day express East, while
crossing the Tuscarora creek, near Per
rysvllle, struck a man who was on the
bridge, and knocked him in the river.
The engineer stopped his train, but see
ing there was no chance of recovering
the body went on to the next station
and Bent word back to Mifflin. Men
were at once sent to the scene of the
disaster, but they were not able to re
cover the body, It probably having been
carried by the swift current into the
Juniata. They however, found the coat
he had on his arm (it tho time, which
had papers in the pocket, showing that
the unfortunate mau was Mr. John D.
Hostler, a resident of Turbett township,
Juniata county. Up to the time our
correspondent wrote (Friday night) tho
body had not been found.
