8 Till TIMES, NEW BLO0MT1EL1), TA., FKMlUAllY 10, 1878. An Unbiased Opinion. From Comloy's Itlogrnptiloal Enoyclope ilia of the dlaUngulsliort men of the Empire Plato, we clip the following : " Every tin lion owe Its particular character, Iti pros polity In brief, every thing that dlsgulalios it aa an Individual nation to the few. nien belonging to It who havo tho courage 1 to step hoyond the boundaries prescribed by partisanship, professional traditions, or social custom. In professional, no less than In political life, there occasionally arlBe men who burst tho fetter of conven- lloualism, ludignautly rejecting the arbi trary limits imposed upon their activity, and step boldly forward into new fields of enterprise. W call these men tetf-niarlr. The rjation claims them as her proudest ornaments the men upon whom' she can lely, in peace for her glory, In war for her succor. Of this class of mou the madioal profession has furnished a distinguished example in tho successful and justly cele brated physician, Dr. 11. V. Tierce, of Jluflalo, N. Y., aud any liUtoiy treating of the industries of tho Empire Btato would be incomplete without a skotch of his use ful life and earnest work." J)r. Pierce is well known to our readers by his popular Family Hemedies and his excellent manual of domostio medicine, " The People's (Jouiniou Sense Medical Adviser." . I3T" A poor woman lay very 111 In her scantily-furnished home In Suefllold, Eng land. Tho doctor was snut for and came, lie at onco saw that hers was a very grave caso, and that she had, as be thought, little chance of recovery eveu If she could got tho nourishment her illness required. ls he was about to leave, tho question was put, "When should we send for you again, doctor?" "Well," wbb tho reply, as be looked at the poor woman aud thou at tier wretched surroundings, 11 1 don't think you need send for me again. 8ho cannot possibly get better , and to save you further trouble, I'll just write you out a certificate for her burial." Aud be did. After the doctor departed tho woman got better rapidly. Hho has now completely recovered, and goes about carrying her burial certificate with her. At least so says the BheUiold Telegraph. One More Unfortunate. Almost every day the papers micle the suicide of some poor unfortunate whoso wind has been enfeebled by dyspopsia,ov er whose earthly horizon a heavy gloom has gathered from the untold aud uutellable agonies of this cruel complaint. Dyspepsia to one of the most depressing diseases afflicting humanity. It is cosmopolitan in jts nature no country is exempt from its visitations, no family free from its attacks. There is a balm in Giload ; it comes in the shape of the Peruvian Syrup. For , years it has been scattering its blessings abroad. There is probably no disease whloh experi ence has so amply proved to be remediable by the Peruvian Hyrup as dyspespia. The most inveterate forms of this disease have been completely cured by this mediciue, as ample testimony of many of our first citizens prove. Sold by all druggists. MEurnis, Tenn., February 8. About 10.80 this morning a negro called at the jail and domanded permission to see a comrade confined there. Jailer Dawson refused and the negro began abusing him in a violent manner, and Dawson drawing a revolver fired, but missing the negro the ball went through a glass door of Corne lius Gi iffing's family grocery store, on the corner of Uverton and Front streets, some two hundred yards distant, and struck Mr. Grilling just below the heart as be was standing in the room, and falling into the arms of his wife exclaimed : "Oh, Katie, I'm killed !" and soon expired. lie was a respected citizen, and his sudden death causes great excitement among his neigh bors. Convicting a Regiment of Horse Thieves. Tho Anti-IIorse-Thief Association num bers 301 lodges and 8,000 members in Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. It secured the conviction of 1,000 horse-thieves last year. Number disposed of without con viotion not stated. It does not recommend lynching except where there is good reason to believe justice will not be done in the courts. Several cases have occurred where horse-thieves have fallen into the hands of tho Association and were never seen or beard of afterward. No questions asked. Recently three men entered Peter Pioht's residence, Easton, by means of a ladder, one end of which they placed at the second story window. Mr. Picht was awakened and struck by one of the robbers with a revolver. The thieves carried away a box containing $730, a gold watch, three silver watches and a number of other articles, nearly all of which belonged to an orphan boy in the house. One of the supposed robbers has been arrested. rJ3" Last week two hunters found in a cave about two miles north of Alexauder, in this State, the corpse of a woman of twenty-two, fastened by a chain and pad . lock to an iron ring in the wall. In the cave were found some packages of clothing, books, cigars and eleven oyster-cans. A shelf held a lot of bottles and tumblers and a broken kerose'ne lamp. The matter ia being investigated by the Coroner, and the result will soon be announoed.
