The truck of a freight car jumped the track at the Rockville bridge on Thurs day, and thew the cars over on the other track, obstructing travel for several hours. A few days ago Mr. Abram Deihl, of Centre twp., slipped while handling a heavy stick ana fell in Biich a manner as to bring his elbow on a double bitted axe inflicting a very severe cut. The remains of James H. Devor,Esq., a few days since, were taken from Tus carora twp., to Shippensburg, and placed in the Public Graveyard, where the Devor family are buried. On Wednesday a week, a son of David Adams, of Kaville twp., had a bone in one of legs fractured while wrestling at school. Teachers should prohibit sport of this kind. The buggy found on the South Moun tain, near Waynesboro', has been claim ed by Jacob Knissley, of Mount Joy, Lancaster county, from whom it was stolen on the 2nd of January. On Thursday night, a son of Abram Kitner had an ankle sprained and was otherwise hurt by wrestling at spelling school, at Huston's school house in Car roll township. There will be a Murphy Temperance meeting in the Presbyterian Church on next (Saturday evening. A speaker from Harrisburg will be present and address the meeting. A few weeks ago Messrs. Carl & Stouf fer, of Harrisburg, purchased a pen of eighteen superior fat hogs, of the Ches ter White breed, from Landlord Ring wait, of the American House, Carlisle, that averaged 306i pounds each. A very large amount of pork seems to be shipped from this county this season, and the shipments keep up much later than is usual. The low price early in the season probably accounts for the de lay in killing, but no gain has been made by waiting. Mr. Jacob Summers dropped dead on Monday, just at the moment he was en tering the store of I). O. Confer, near Marktesburg, Huntingdon county. Mr. Daniel Brown, a resident of York county, living near the Red Run church, was found dead on Saturday morning, 2nd Inst., in a field on the farm of David Deardorn, close by. It appears that as a Mrs. Wallace and her daughter were passing the field they observed the body of a man partly covered with snow, and upon reaching it, found it to be that of Mr. Brown. He had left his home on Friday morn ing to visit his son living a couple of miles distant, and it was thought by the fam ily that he bad remained there over night. He was about 60 years of age. Comet. . , , t , , Large Barn Burned. On Wednesday morning the large barn of David Brown 3 miles from East Berlin, on the Cone wago, In Adams county, was totally de stroyed by fire. There was in the barn 30 head of fat cattle, 5 of which were burned to death and the sixth so badly burned, that it was killed, a cow and calf were also burned. There was also 500 bushels of threshed, and 300 bushels of un threshed wheat, bay, straw, Ac, an out-building Adjoining was also de stroyed, , The horses Jhad fortunately been taken out, ready to be hitched, and the family were at breakfast when ' the fire broke out. Mr. Brown, in hit efforts to save the cattle, was nearly suffocated and fell over several times, when Lis son came to his rescue, and assisted him. The building had been Insured only a week ago in the Paradise company. The fire was no doubt the work of incen diaries. About four weeks ago another barn belonging to Mr. Brown was burned. Borne time during last fall or summer, Mr. Brown had a quantity of flour sto len from his mill, and he had employed detectives to ferret out the guilty parties, and it is supposed that they took this means to be revenged. York Democrat of the K'th imt. An Unwelcome Visitor. About 2 o'clock on the morning of the 11th Mr. David Newcomer, clerk in charge of Dlehl & Co., 's warehouse at Richmond Furnace was awakened by loud raps at the door of the building for admittance. On an swering the request, the knocker in formed him that he had been thrown off his horse and wished to remain there until morning. Mr. Newcomer opened the door and admitted the stranger who immediately asked for a drink of water, which was given him. As he was re turning tbe empty glass the rufilan, as his true character now appeared, sud denly produced a sand bag, and struck a blow at Mr. N., which he fortunately warded off receiving it on his arm. Mr. Newcomer drew a revolver and lired two shots at the retreating figure, who thus foiled at the outset had fled, without however as far as is known hitting him. Mr. N. says the man was evidently in disguise. It was doubtless his intention after disposlug of his victim to make a raid on the property for valuables, which but for the coolness and bravery of Mr. Newcomer, he might have accomplished. Franklin Repository. Cumberland County. We copy the fol lowing from the Cumberland county papers of last week : Last Monday night the store of Mr. Geo. W. Buttorff, dry goods merchant, in Mechanicsburg, was broken into and robbed of between four and five hundred dollars worth of fine goods, such as silks, kid gloves, crepe veils, Thibet shawls, sewing silk, ribbons, silk ties and handkerchiefs leaving all other goods unmolested. The thieves efl'ected an entrance by boring numerous auger holes in a panel of the outside door and thus forcing out a piece of panel and breaking the lock on the door. They left no trace behind, and made good their escape. A stable belonging to Chas. Cramer, at Big Spring, was burned at an early hour on Sunday morning last. It was probably the work of an incendiary, as a horse which a young man of the fam ily had placed in the stable an hour be fore the fire was found tied to a fence away from the burning stable. The loss is partly covered by insurance. On Tuesday morning, Carr Bishop, of Boiling Springs, aged 12 years, had the right knee badly lacerated by falling from the arms of a threshing machine whilst in motion into the machine. The accident occurred at the residence of Mr. Bishop, in South Middleton. Drs. Krise and Dale were called in and bandaged tbe little fellow's injuries. Juniata County. There is a willow tree at Moist's spring, near this town, that is 22 feet in circumference. James Williams, residing in Ferma nagh township, slipped on ice on the road, fell and broke a thigh. On Tuesday evening a week, about ten o'clock, as Luther Kepner was passing a strip of wood, on horseback, a short distance on thU side of his father's residence in Milford township, he was fired on by some person in the wood. The bullet from the discharged Eiece of fire-arms, passed through lUther's hat above his head. The passage of the bullet two inches lower would have produced death. The crock of the weapon frightened the horse into a run, and thus Kepner got away from other shots if others were intended for him. s i. On Friday of last week, Mr. Howard Woodmansee, of this place, while en gaged in making a blast in the foundry in which he is employed had both his eyes badly burned. Air. W. was engaged in stopping up the mouth of the cupola after he bad drawn a ladleful of melted metal, when by some cause or another a sheet of the red-hot liquid burst out, striking him across the eye, very seri ously though not fatally injuring those valuable organs. His Honor, Judge Junkin, and his merry jetters, the lawyers, had a full week of it in this place last week. Court opened at 11 o'clock Monday morning and did not adjourn until 12 o'clock Saturday night, with evening sessions nearly very evening during the week.
