Whole Farms Washed Away.
Nover in the memory of man lias tliure
occurred Biich a 1'Ibo in the streams of
Hampshire county, W. Va., m by the
recent flood, nor bo great destruction of
crops and fencing. Bo extensive lins been
the destruction that it amounts to a
calamity. Along tho South Brnnch scarce
ly a shock of corn or a slnck of liny re
mains ; the wholo vallpy Is a clean sweep ;
crops and fencing, and tlio embankments
are all broken and swept away. All the
fat cattle and other stock of every kind
are loft on the hands of the farmers at the
beglultig of winter without food, and pro
bably not a sufficiency of food loft to
winter the horses that are used to till the
ground ; consequently the cattle must be
thrown on the market, or seek a more
favored country for food.
A despatch from Moorcllelcl, Hardy
county, say that the destruction by the
Hood in that county alone will reach 400,
000. There are not a thousand shocks of
corn in the valley of the South Branch of
the Potomac. Farms have been washed
completely away, and land that was worth
$100 an aero is now utterly without value.
The suffering among the cattle is very
great, and hundreds of farmers are ruined.
The torrent reached from mountain to
mountain, and was twenty feet deop.
A Priest Said to Have Been Kidnapped.
Detroit, Mich., December 5. The eve
ning papers give an account of tho recent
abduction of Father Fitzpatrick of King,
ville, Out., sixteen miles from Windsor.
Fitzpatiick lived next to Eider Heudeison,
with whom he became intimate, and by
whom he was converted to Methodism.
On Friday Fitzpatiick appeared ot tho
Methodist Conference at Belle River, and
embraced the faith, an exciting crowd of
Catholics attending. Fitzpatiick, accom
panied by Henderson, started to return to
Kingvillo, and on the way stopped for
supper at a bouse near Essex. While wait
ing for Biipper Fitzpatrick was called out
by two men, supposed to be members of
the Kingville Catholic Church, who said
they would like to talk with him concern
ing the step be bad just taken. The three
strolled leisurely down tho road until out
of sight of the house, and nothing has
been seen of Fitzpatrick since. An inves
tigation is in progress. The Catholics in
Canada as well as in Detroit are Btirred up
over Fitzpatrick 's defection. It is believed
tbe kidnapped priest was kept at the bouse
of the priest at Maidstone Cross that night,
and the next day taken to a convent at
Sandwich or Amerstburg.
Can a Wife Hire Her Husband?
A novel question presented itself before
Judge Bchenck, at Asheville, North
Carolina, recently. At the spring term of
Buncombe Court, Judge FurcheB sentenced
one Shaft to Imprisonment In tho County
Jail for Bix months. After be had remain
ed in jail a month, the Couuty Commis
sioners, having seen the recent act of As
sembly allowing them to hire out convicts
to the public works, or " Individuals,"
proceeded to hire Shaft out to bis wife for
$3 per month, and Shaft moved his quar
ters to the old domicil as tbe prisoner and
"hireling" of his wife. Tho matter now
presented by the Solicitor of the Court, His
Honor ordered that Shaft be committed to
prison as an escaped convict, holding that
though the lcttor of the law had been com
plied with, it was a violation of its spirit
and meaning, and a virtual nullification of
tbe sentence of tbe Court. Capt. McLoud,
who is the prisoner's couusel, has appealed
to tbe Supreme Court.
Skirmish Between a Journalist and a Mayor.
Isaac M. Brown, editor of the Columbus,
Indiana " Republican," has been making
things hot for gamblers aud other wrong
doers in that city, and has been bringing
bis stogas down upon the corns of Mayor
Cooper, who, be declares, agreed to wiuk
at infractions of the law as the price of bis
olection. On Sunday the mayor and tbo
oditor met, and after a war of words
buckled in. The editor displays two
black eyes, and the mayor shows up with a
chawed thumb and a loss of wbiskors.
Lawrence, Kan, December 11. The
Simpsou bank, of the city, went into
voluntary liquidation yestorday, and J. S.
Chew was appointed receiver. It was tbe
oldest banking institution in tbe city. It
is believed that the assets of the bank, if
not sacrificed, will bo sufllcieut to pay tho
creditors iu full.

Mr. II. It. Stevens: Dear Blr My daughter,
after having asevere attack of Whooping Cough,

using a few bottles was fully restored to health.
I have been a great sullerer from Rheumatism.
Ihavetaken several bottles of the Vegetlne for
this eompliU lit, and am happy to say It has entire
ly cured me. I have recommended the Vegetlne
to others with the same good results. Jt Is agreat
cleanser and purlller of the blood; It Is pleasant
to take and I can cheerfully recommend It.

lUieuinnllNm la a Disease of tlio Blood.
The blood In this disease, Is found to contain an
excess of fibrin. Vegetlne acts by converting
the blood Horn Its diseased condition to a heulthv
circulation. Vegetlne regulates the bowels which
Is very Important In th's complaint. One bottle
of Vegetlne will give relief, but to effect a per
manent cure It must be taken regularly, and may
take several bottles, especially In case's of long
standing. Vegetlne Is sold by all druggists. Try
It, and your verdict will be the same as that ol
thousands before you, who say. "1 never found
so much relief as from the use or Vegetlne,"
which Is composed exclusively of Barks, Jtoots
and Herbs.
"Vegetlne," says a Iloston phvsiclan, "lias no
equal as a blood purlller. Healing of Its many
wonderful cures, after all other remedies had
failed, I visited the laboratory and convinced
myself of Its genuine merit. It Is prepared from
barks, roots and herbs, each of which Is highly

manner as to produce astouisliln results."
