The " Blow Fighter" was a tall, raw

him out to fight.
He went. When they all got ready
and squared off, Tike county Btretched
out his long neck and presented the tip
of his big nose triumphantly close to his
tormentor; " I'm a little slow," lie
said, "and can't fight unless I'm well
riled ; just paste me one a good one
right on the end of that smeller."
Ills request was complied with.
" That was a good 'un," ho said calm

The astonished adversary again com

father was a bill-poster, and who had
occasionally practiced In the same hum

one evening strutting In the green room
wllb a pair of glittering buckles, a
gentleman who was present remarked
that they really resembled diamonds.
" Sir," said the actor with warmth, " I
would have you know I never wear
anything except diamonds I" "I ask
your pardon," replied the gentleman,
" I remember the time when you
handled a great deal of paste." This
produced a good laugh, which was
heightened by Bannister's jogging him
on the shoulder, and dryly saying,
" Hang me, Jack, why don't you stick
him against the wall V"
A teacher of a Sunday school in
the Interior of New York was Impress
ing upon the scholars a lesson in con
nection with the death of one of -their
number. She told them that little Amy
was now a saint in heaven. Where
upon one of the girls spoke up and said,
" Bhe will get plenty of preserves there."
Astonished to hear her make such a
statement, the questioned her to ascer
tain what could have put the idea in her
mind. It was finally traced to the
following question and answer in the
catechism : '
" Question. Why pught the saints to ,

" Answer. Because He makes, pre
serves, and keeps them."
l1 The Rev. Dr. Howard, chaplain
to the mother of George III, Rector of
St. George's South wark, was always in
arrears with his tradesman, and was
often perplexed to keep them in a good
temper. He once took for his text,
" Have patience and I wlilpayyou all."
After dilating at some length on the
virtue of patience, he said, " And now
I am come to the second part of my dis
course, which Is, 'and I will pay you
all,' but that I shall defer to a future
opportunity."
He was making a call, and they
were talking of literature. " The Pil
grim's Progress," she remarked, "al--ways
seems to be painful. Of course
you are familiar with Bunyanf" He
said he had one on each foot, and they
troubled him a good deal.
There Is an undertaker in Chicago

Sinn would get no wages at all.
