A Wlcheta, Kan., letter Bays ! Im
mense quantities of wheat are raised In
this section of Kansas. It Is already
harvested, threshed, and coming Into
market. The streets are full of wagons,
and the grain buyers are as lively as the
festive grasshopper, rubbing thelrhamls,
and grinning with bright anticipations
of being able to make a contract with
Russia to fatten Turkey on Kansas
wheat. Corn is growing llnely, and
promises an unusually large yield. It is
far In advance of Illinois corn. Old
corn is quoted at 25c. per bushel ; new
wheat, No. 8, at 85c; No. 4, 700.; No, 2,
OOo.
These are the prices that the farmer
gets. Now the Atchison, Topeka and
Hunt a Fe ltallroad steps In and robs the
grain buyer, to the tune of 18 cents per
bushel, for transporting the grain 228
miles. The railroads are very moderate
in their demands, charging only about
HI cents per mile to all who would enjoy
the first sensation of traveling at the
rate of 10 miles per hour. The engines
are always dry, and Btop at the end of
each six mile run to drink. They never
run over the bridges but walk, no matter
if the bridge Is only ten feet long.
Sheep raising is quite a source of In
dustry to the few farmers who have ex
perimented In that line. One fleece was
brought Into town, sheared from a half
blood Cotswold lamb, that weighed 141
pounds of unwashed wool.
A finer farming country can be found
nowhere than in' this section of the
State, and at prices so low that even a
poor man can ad'ord a small lot of forty
acres. Rich and well watered rolling
prairie lands can be purchased at prices
ranging from $2 per acre for unimprov
ed to $10 with good improvements
fencing, etc. Provisions are about as
cheap as the land, and a man earning
SI per day can live like a lord and de
posit in the Dime Havings Bank each day

To Increase the Flow of Milk. ,
A southern lady says : " Tepid water,
slightly salted, given twice a day, will
increase the flow of milk one-third ; if
the cow will not drink it at first trial
scatter a handful of bran or meal over
the top of It. .They soon become very
fond of it, and will drink all you give
them. I tried this plan three years ago.
with perfect success. I had only one
cow, and she was of the common scrub
stock of the country, and after she be
gan to drink the water, prepared as
above, she furnished me twice a day
two ordinary water buckets full of
milk.

elements, and, as a writer in the agricul
tural department of the Weekly Tribune

the masses are gratified at the expense
of their digestion and health, that the
practice Is still persisted In, despite the
teachings of scientists and physicians.
'The flour from good grain can only be
improved by freeing it from all foreign
substances, and 'cleaning perfecly the
exterior of the wheat, and the only
Whiteness that should be required Is that
(produced by age.

is one of vastly more importance than
some farmers think., Animals, no more
than, vegetables, can thrive in the dark.
Our long winters are sufficiently trying
to the constitutions of our farm-stock,
under the beet circumstances, and an
Animal upon which the sun .scarcely
chines at all for five or six months will
come out in the spring in a bad state of
health, eren though the feed, and the
ventilation, and the temperature have
been all right. The sun is the great
life-giver. Vermont Chronicle.
t& The Jourtud of Chemistry says,
'that hot alum water is the best insect
destroyer known. Put the aluin into
hot water and let it boil till all the alum
is dissolved ; then apply it hot with a
bruslj to all crocks, closets, bedsteads,
and other places where any insects are
found. Ants, bed-bugs, cockroaches
and creeping thing are killed by it ;
while it has no danger of poisoning the
family or Injuring property.
C3 To preserve Autumn leaves, have
a middling hot iron and rub on quickly
a little white wax, then quickly press
both sides of the leaves ; wax the iron
anew for each side of the leaf; only rub
the iron once over the leaf. "Forest
tree leaves for wreaths" are prepared in
the enme way.
