THE TIMES, NEW BLOOM EI ELD, PA.1, AUGUST 28,' 1877.
A Guilty Conscience.
The Philadelphia SYar snyi : There np
pe.trod nt the Blxth Dlntriot nlnliun,
Eleventh slroot below Vine, on Frldny, a
stranger, apparently not more than 23 yonr
old, who wnuted Sergeant Thompson to
t ake him into custody to ease his consoionce.
He said that his name was John Henderson,
aud that he was forroorly 111 troop E, Hus
sais, in the service of her Majesty, Queen
of England. There was connected with
the company a sergeant named Wheolcr,
with whom he wentspreoing one evening
in last January, at a place uaniod Colgate.
He disoovored that Wbeolorhad moro mon
ey than himself and conceiving the idea of
robbing him, he struck him on the head
with a carbine, killed him and then threw
the body down a cess-pool, and, with 10
found on Wheeler, he lied to America.
Arriving in New York be was troubled
so that he came to Philadelphia, and still
haunted by the recolloctions of the murder,
be dotermiued to give himself up. Ser
geant Thompson detained the stranger in
custody, and apprised the English vice con
sul, who at once communicated with the
authorities of his country. Learning that
the dead body of a man had been found in
a cesspool nt Colgato about tho time spe
ci lied, and that two soldiers named Wheeler
aud Henderson had deserted from the Brit
ish army, the stranger witB taken beforo
Magistrate Pole this morning and held for
a further hearing. .
A Strange Death.
A fow days ago llov. 5Ir. Clarke, of
Augusta, Oil., was Bent for to administer
consolation to a Mr. Buckley, who was
dying, but he did not arrive until after he
died. The clergyman rend prayers, prayed
extemporaneously, and endeavored to ad
minister cousolatiou to the grief-stricken
widow of Mr. Buckley, who was in the
next room. As sho was very much ex
hausted, aud it seemed probable that sho
would faint, Mr. Clarko rubbed her fore
liead with some bay rum, holding the
'bottle iu one baud. Afterward somo cofleo
Was brought in for her, aud Mr. Clarke
took a saucer and hold it for her to drink.
While he was doing this, a lady in the
room noticed that the bottle of bay rum
fell from bis hand. She picked it up and
handed it back again, but it fell again.
She then noticed that Mr. Clarke seemed
to be ill or faint, aud at once made him Bit
down. She spoke to him, but he mndo
only some inarticulate reply. Alarmed,
he called several gentlemen in the next
room, and these at once came in and en
deavored to arouse him, but in vain. Then
they carried him out on the balcony, hoping
that the fresh air would revive him.
They bathed bis face with ice water, and
gave him some to drink, but all in vain.
Three physicians who had been summoned
soon arrived, but they were unable to do
anything. The patient was beyond humau
aid. lie lingered in a totally unconscious
state until 0 o'clock A. M., and then died.
The cause of death was paralysis of the
brain.
Horses and Hogs Poisoned.
No little excitement has been caused nt
St. Charles Borromoo Theological Semina
ry farm near Overbrook Station, on the
i Pennsylvania Railroad, in consequence, of
the death by poisoning of four valuablo
horses, eight bogs and a lot of poultry.
Attention was first called to tho sudden
sickness and death of seven' hogs a fow
' weeks ago. They were fed as usual on the
preceding evening by the farmer, and ap
peared well; on the following morning be
found two dead in the pen, and in a few
hours the other five died. The following
day two of the work horses died. The
. same evening a fine driving mare belong
ing to Rev. Dr. O'Connor, tho rector, sick
ened with tho same symptoms and died in
about soven hours. A fourth horse and
the eighth hog died shortly afterward, fol
lowed by a lot of the poultry. A chemical
analysis of the stomach of one of the horses
was made at the University of Pennsylva
nia, and strychnine in considerable quanti
ties was found. The discovery of the poi
soning has created a great deal of inquiry
as to the villain who committed the deed,
as there is no doubt it is a case of mali
cious poisoning.
Discharging Chinamen In California.
In the town of Chioo, California, on Sat
urday, arrangements were completed for
the discharge of all the Chinamen in the
Sierra Flume and Lumber Company's sash,
door and blind factory there. Two months
ago the matter was first considered, and
Dot until now was the way clear for its
adoption. On the 15th of August they will
leave, and by the 1st of September it is ex
pected that sixty or seventy white men and
boys will take their places. The citizens
rejoice over the prospect. Other establish
ments, which employ small numbers of
Chinamen, are also talking of discharging
them and employing white help. Virgin

Confession of a Murderer.
Philadelphia, August 22. Adolph
Sterfolchy, Russian, who was arrested
in this city on Friday, as an accomplice of
Whalen, for the murder of Max Hoebne,
at Elm station, has made a full confession
to detective Abrams, by whom he was cap
tured. Many things belonging to the mur
dered man wore found in Sterfolchy's possession.
