Trouble with Berry Pickers. A dispatch from Marlboro, Ulster conn ty, Now York says : The lawlessness at this place this season is unprecedented. "With tho arrival of the berry season each year follows nil kinds of depredatious, but this year they are worso than ever before. Milton, Highland, and Marlborough are tho three principal berry places on the Hudson river, and they, together, produce more beiries fo the market than nil the other places on the river combined. To do this it is of course necessary to employ pickers from other places, and there are thus engaged each year from 000 to 800 men and boys. These pickers aro made up from the worst classes, and New York city furnishes the worst of them. Now burgh, Kingston, and Poughkeepsie also furnish their share. The" pickers prowl about all hours of the day and night. ' Their offences consist of burglaries, out rages upon women, and assaults upon farmers. I drove here to-day to learn the particulars of the crimes committed, and one of the ilrst attempts at stealing was at Mrs. McElrath's millinery store in this vil lage. The store was visited at night and an attempt made to enter, bnt so bungling ly did the thieves do their work that they were detected and fled. A picker visited the house of Mr. Ira Staples. He called for something to eat, and after being bountifully supplied, lie carried oft' some valuables, and attempted an assault upon the lady of the house. Ho then visiled tho residence of Judge Still well. From Mr. Stillwell's he took several articles of wearing appaiel and other things. The villain then went to tho house of Daniel Berrian, a respectable farms living near the village. lie first killed Mr. Berrian's watch dog. The noise brought Mrs. Berriau upon tho scene, and her screams soon brought Mr. Bcrrian him self. When remonstrated with for killing the dog, the thief exclaimed : "I'll kill you, too !" Mr. Berrian, with some neigh N bors, drove him oil". He was finally captur- ed. lie theu got the officer who had him in custody drunk, aud walked away. The Mixed Babies. Some years ago, in Scotland, two inti mate neighbors, childless women of middle age, bad each a son born on the same night. It was a cold season, and for greater convenience and comfort a great fire was built in the kitchen of ouly one of the two houses, and thero the raidwives dressed the newly born babes. Something distracted their attentiou and the identity of the infants was lost. There was no al ternative but to leave to chance the deter mination of which was the baby belonging in the house where the Are was, and ac cordingly it was selected in a dark room, in which the babies were laid side and side. The father of one of tho infants was a wealthy man with an immense Roman nose ; the father of the other was poorer and had a small pug nose. Time passed , the fathers each dieU and the boys grow to maturity. As they grow, the boy assigned to the rich man's family showed symptoms of a nose pointing partly skyward, while the other's face developed a great nose, hooked like an eagle's beak. There was no mistaking the inference. When the Roman-nosed boy reached maturity he brought suit for the property left by tho rich man aud now held by tho pug-nosed ' youth. The legal contest was bitter but brief. The noses were brought into court by their respective owners, and the Jury could not hesitate. The young man with the Roman development was reinstated in bis undoubted right. It was a Scottish cause celebre. pest bargains In America, p ARMQ .1. F. They desired to get money enough to go to California. They went to separate hotels. Une registered as a physician, and advertised a remedy for cholera. The other put up a large quanti ty of yeast powders into sample packages, with a little croton oil in each, and hired a boy to distribute them. Soon family after family, affected by the croton oil, felt what they believed were symptoms of cholera. The sale of the cholera remedy was enormous, and the gamblers were en abled to go to California. They now tell the story through the Virginia City " En-terprise." Blue and Red LIGHT.
