IIMWUKIKMl! 8 THE TIMES, NEW BL00MFIEL1), l'A., JUNE 25, 1877. "THE SURE WITNESS." " The nineteenth century Is Iho nuo of novels," remarks a literary historian lie miff lit luivo milled with rqiml truth, "and tiovcl impositions." Ht lulled politeness bns been passed off on us for native rofluo ment, the forms of devotion for itsessonco, nnd speculations for science, tintil wo look askance nt every new person or tiling, and to nn assertion of merit, invariiibly exclnlni, "I'rove It!" In brief, Salmi hasmado him self (so omnipresent, that, wo look for his cloven foot everywhere even in a bottle of medloiue. Imagine a lady, having a com plexion so sallow that you would deny her claims to the Caucasian type if her features did not conform to it, purchasing her llrst bottle of the Golden Medical Discovery. The one dollar is paid in the very identical manner in which Mr. Tuylor might be ex pected to purchase a lottery ticket after his experience with "No. 104, 103," with this dill'ereiico, his doubt would bo the result of personal experience, whilo hers would be founded on what a certain practitioner (who has beeii a whole year trying to correct her refractory liver) has said concerning it. At borne, she examines tho bottle half suspiciously, taste of its contents carefully, takes the prescribed doso more carefully, und then proceeds to watch the result with as much unxicty as a practitioner would count the pulse-beats of a dying man. Bho takes another dose, and another, and shows the bottle to her friends, telling them she " feels better." Her skin loses its billions tint, her eyes regain thoir lustre, her accus tomed enevgy returns, and tho fact that she purchases another bottlo is a sure witness that she had found the Golden Medical Discovery to bo a reliable remedy for the diseaso indicated. The lady wisely resolves that in future her estimate of any medicine will bo based upon a personal knowledge of its ellects, and not uppu what some practitioner (who always makes long bills rhyme with pills) may say of it. Dr. Pierce is in receipt of letters from hundreds of the largest wholesale and retail druggists In the United States stating that nt the present time there is a greater demand for tho Golden Medical Discovery and Purga tive Pellets than ever before. Inflec tions of the liver and blood they are unsurpassed. Sunday in Deadwood. On Sunday the people pour into Dead wood from the adjoining camps, and during the day the streets have the appearance of a national celebration. On closer inspection you discover that the crowd is attracted by an auctioneer, who has mounted a barrel and is crying his wares, the accumlation of every kind of pawned property. On the other side the prize package man holds out valuable inducements to a gaping crowd, who, after listening to a harangue of fif teen minutes, stand in awo, with disap pointment stamped upon thoir countenances to see the fortune they might have possess ed had they only drawn the lucky packet he displays before them. Then the bands send out lively music from tho " free-and-easy V whilo the merchants are busy bantering their wares for gold dust to tho dusky miner. Everybody is on the alert, tramping to and fro, in and out and up and down tho mountains. Then, just around the corner from this busy throng, the un pretentions building occupied for a church sends forth its echoes from the three or four score of worshippers there assembled and many are the hardy miners who here take the opportunity to thank God for health and success ; and all these, together with the confusion upon the streets and yelps from dog fights, reverberate over the bills. When the weather is pleasant groups of two and upwards are seen winding upou the towering bed rocks or climbing through the mountain pines. Toone not accustomed to the romantio regions.such proceedings religion, traffic, toil and pleasure going to make up Sunday appear absurd in tho extreme. But such is mountain life, and in a brief time tho most fastidious pilgrim from the more Athenian regions will be come accustomod to and fascinated by them. Black Hill Times. A Dodge That Worked Badly. A telegram says that Thomas Wilson, a skillful forger and expert telegraph opera tor, forged a draft for $9400 on a bank in Cynthiana, Ky., and took in with him as a confederate a woman named Amanda Griftin who was to present the check at the bauk of George II. CoUes in Osceola. At a point about thirtyinilcs from Osceola the telegraph wire was cut, and connected with wires running out through tho brush to a secluded spot, where a battery and instrument were placed, and where,- tho operator was stationed. The woman pre sented the draft, and although the forging was well executed, the cashier had sonio doubt as to its genuineness, and so express ed himself. " Telegraph then, tolegraph," was the woman's response. Of courso the scheme was to have the cashier telograph, to intercept the message at the point whore the wire was cut, and then, after waiting a proper time, to answer that tho draft was all light. The bank did telegraph, but through some bungling on the part of tho operator, the message got past the break, reached its proper dutiuation, and a reply at once was received that tho draft was a forgery. The woman was in tho bauk when the reply came, and she was immediately arrested. Wilson was also arrested. C53T A man and his wife who keep a little provision shop in Chester, England, have beeu blessed with several children, but all have died. Recently the mau happened to be in the Black Lion Inn, Boughton, and there met a dissipated looking woman, with a child extremely l.ke the one they had last buried. Struck with the resemblance, he hurried home to bis wife to toll ber of the occurence. They both returned to the inn, and, after some questions and bargaining, succeeded in getting the woman to part with the child for the sum of $1.25. The infant was taken by the man and wife.and the woman went on her way and has not been beard of since. The child is now looking remarkably well and clean, and has wonderfully im proved in appearance. The only anxiety felt by its new possessors is lest the strange woman should return to claim the little waif. tW A Fort Wayne gentleman offered for sale tlfe other day the skeletons cf bis father and grandfather, which he had dug up from the grave for that purpose, lie was drunk.
