Science at Fault.
They lind a liltro-gljwlne explosion
the other day at one of the Hudnon
Illver towns we shnn't ay which hut
it was not a thousand miles from Ring
Blng. A contractor who hud burled
half a do?n cans of it in his potato
patch to keep them safe over the Winter,
went out with a pickaxe to exhume one;
in a few minutes after there was a terri
ble explosion, n big hole In the ground,
and no man.
A crowd immediately gathered, and
among them of course came the doctor,
but, dins I there was no need of bis
services. Not a fragment of the victim
was to be found larger than a hand, and
before long half a bushel of shreds and
remnants of flesh were gathered up into
a basket and brought into the house to
await a Christian burial. Just then a
horrible thought was suggested by a
bystander:
" His dog," said he, " the faithful
creature, always was with him. The
dog must have been Mown up too. We
can't bury the pieces of the dog with
his pieces, can we ?"
" Oh, that's easily settled," said the
doctor approaching the basket and tak
ing up a part of the contents; "here
science steps In, you see ; now this, for
instance, 1 recognize as a part of the
canine structure, a section of the trachea.
AVe will throw that to one side."
" But, doctor," interposed a female
bystander, "are you sure, doctor ?"
"Positive, madam. Science never
errs. Now this, (taking up another
piece), tills is the glenoid cavity of a
human knee ; In this, the epiglottis of
the dog ; we throw it aside. This is a
section of the unfortunate man's cere
bellum; and here are parts of the
tuberosities of the ichium. Here, again,
Is a piece of the dog, his oesophagus; I
should say this"
Just then there was a preemptible
movement in the outer circle of by
standers, and the dog came running in
alive and well. Illustrated Wcck'y.
Thankful, But Absent Minded.
During the session of a temperance
meeting in a neighboring town, one of
the persons who occupied the stage was
an enthusiastic deacon who frequently
Interrupted the speakers by yelling:
"Thank Clod for that." One gentle
man was called upon, who arose and
said :
" Ladies and gentlemen, I am heart
and soul in this cause, and feel that it
will be a great benefit to the people of
this place."
" Thank God for that," yelled the
deacon.
" But ladies and gentlemen," he con
United, " I am sorry to say that it will
be impossible for me to address you this
evening "
" Thank God for that." said the ah.
sent-mlnded deacon, and then the chair-
man took hiin out doors, and two men
set on him. '
63" A Nevada journal says that " a
certain candidate has lost thirteen voteg
through making a rash promise to his
wife. He had promised that in the
event of his election he would buy her a
seal-skin cloak and a pair of navy blue
stockings, and she couldn't rest till she
told thirteen lady friends all about it.
The lady expressed themselves as "awful
glad" to hear it, but threatened their
husbands with a suit for divorce if they
dared to vote for this particular candi
date. " That old cat would look nice in
a seal-skin cloak and navy blue stock
ings, wouldn't she '" is the way they
expressed themselves in speaking of the
candidate's wife. Who says that wo
men have no political influenceV"
63T It was a Leesburg girl who re
marked to a troublesome lover the other
evening as he has about to depart : " If
it's just as well, you needn't trouble
yourself to call any more." " Oh it's
no trouble," exclaimed the chap, earn
estly. " It's no trouble at all ; I like to
call."
A little scarlet fever convalescent
was overheard praying repeatedly, while
about her play : " Oh, good Lord, cure
my earache!" Her mother asked;
" What are you saying my dear ?"
"Nothing," said the little girl: "I
wasn't talking to you, I'm talking to
the Lord."
O A seedy old chap thinks It is very
strange that the number of men who
are willing to lend you five dollars is bo
outrageously small in comparison with
the number who want to borrow that
amount. . ..
C3T Many a man has ruined his eye
sight by sitting in a bar-room looking
for work.
