INT A minlBtef was riding through a
section of the State of Bouth Carolina,
where custom forbade Innkeepers to
take pay from the clergy who stayed
with them. The minister In question
took supper without prayer, and ate his
breakfast without prayer or grace, and
was about to take his departure, when
" mine host" presented his bill. "Ah,
sir," said ho, "I am a clergyman!"
" That may be," responded Boniface;
"but you came here, smoked like a
sinner, and ate and drank like a sinner,
and slept like a sinner; and now, sir,
you shall pay like a sinner."
The children of a clergyman's
family were making themselves happy
propounding conundrums. Directly
one of them said: "Who was the
meekest woman?" The clergyman
seemed struck with a fresh thought and
replied, quickly : " We don't of any."
But madam made herself even with him
when she rejoined, with quite as much
quickness : " Well, we read of only one
such man, and, from the fuss that's
made about hlm.lts plain they're scarce."
W A man noted for his close-fisted
propensities was showing an old coin to
a neighbor, when the latter asked,
" Where did you get It ?" " I dug It out
of my garden," was the reply. " It Is a
pity you didn't find it in the cemetery,"
said the neighbor. "Why so," asked
the coin owner. " Because you could
have saved the hole to be buried In,"
was the somewhat unexpected re;,ly.
A Springfield paper thinks the
Indian should be harnessed to the plow.
The idea is a brilliant one. The deep
voice of the farmer shouting, " Whoa,
back, gee, Feeble-bear-witb-a-sarcastlc
eyelld," and "Back, now, Crow-with-a-saw-buck-on-both-arms,"
would be sweet
rustic music to mingle with the lowing
of the distant Durham bull.
An old lady received a letter, and
supposing it to be from one of her absent
sons, she called on a friend to read it to
her. He accordingly began to read thus:
" Dear mother," then making a stop to
see what followed, as the writing was a
little bad, the old lady exclaimed, f Oh,
yes, that's my poor Jerry, he alius stut
tered." Two commercial travelers com
paring notes : " I have been out three
weeks," said the first missionary, " and
have only got four orders." " That
beats me," replied the second commer
cial evangelist ; " I have been out four
weeks and have only got one order, and
that's an order from the house to come
home."
A St. Louis paper tells a story of a
disconsolate widower who, on seeing
the remains of his late wife lowered in
the grave, exclaimed, with tears in hia

horses ; but I never no, never had

asked Miss Smith. And Jones, after

only marry women." Puck.
A Teuton in a neighboring city
loves a German widow, who has ,
" Two eyes of pine dot dance around
And lips like so much honey ; .
And she owns a house on Hastings street
And In der pank bat money."
rT "Don't kiss me again,' or I'll
scream," she said. " I wouldn't ; your
mother will hear you," trembled the
young man. "No, she won't," said
sweetness, archly ; and then he " don't
