7 " Handsome Is as handsome does'
quoted a Chiengo man to lils wife on a
recent occasion. " Yea," rejoined the
lady, In a winning tone, and holding
out her hand, " for instance, a husband
who Is always ready to hand some money
to his wife."
Married Indies will be so good as
to hold the Norwich Uullcin responsible
for the following : " Don't you think,"
she inquired amiably, " that most men
are possessed of a devil V" lie said he
thought they were, particularly after
they were married.
O" A Norwich man has Invented a
plan in three parts by which no one
need lose his life in ft burning hotel.
The first part states that a man should
never stop at ft hotel. Omitting the
other two parts, the plan is generally
considered a success.
Among the replies to an advertise
ment of a muslo committee for " a
candidate as organist, muslo teacher,"
Ac, was tho following: "Gentlemen,
I notice your advertisement for an
organist and music teacher, either lady
or gentleman. Having been both for
several years, I offer you my services."
O" The following is a verbatim copy
of a tomb stone inscription In Pennsyl
vania: "Hattleof Bbiloh, April 6,1872,
John D. L , was born March. 20,
1830, In the town of West Dresden,
State of New York, where the wicked
cease from troubling and the weary are
at rest."
f" " But I pass," said a minister one
Sunday In dismissing one theme of his
subject to take up another. " Then I
make it spades!" yelled a man from the
gallery who was dreaming the happy
hours away in an imaginary game of
euchre. It is needless to say that he
went out on the next deal, being assisted
by one of the deacons with a full hand
of clubs.
It wag at the critical moment of
the battle," said a Dubuque minister
in an impassioned burst of eloquence
last Babbath, "when the Wuke of
Dellington I mean theDelk of Wull
ington I should say, when the Welk
of Dullington that is, when the Dule
of Welklngton at the wottle of Batter
loo er urn " And then somehow the
passage appeared to be so badly mangled
that he didn't think It would pay to
repair it, so he said, "And seventhly
and lastly," and went on.
m-A story is told of a shrewish
Scotchwoman who tried to wean her
husband from the public house by em
ploying her brother to act the part of a
ghost, and frighten, John on his way
home. " Who are you V" said the guld
man, as the apparition rose before him j
from behind a bush. " I am auldNick," j
was the reply. " Come awa man," j
said John, nothing daunted; "gie's a
shake of your hand ; I an married to a '
sister o' yours." 5
S?"Merri weather lives in oneof a row
of houses which, as is generally the case
in Allentown, are uniform. He thought
the other night he would scare Mrs.
Merriweather while she was In bed, so
he rose and dressed in his night shirt,
and went upon the roof while she slept.
He tied a nail upon a piece of string, lay
down on the comic, leaned over and
tapped the bed-room window with the
nail. Mrs. Merriweather meanwhile
was not asleep, but she followed him up,
shut the trap-door In the loft and went
back to bed. Merriweather concluded
to give it up and turn in, but to- his
dismay the trap would not open. To
make matters worse, a policeman who
hod been watching him felt certain he
was a burglar, and began to practise at
him with his revolver. The manner in
which that old man dodged about those
chimneys, clad in that simple robe of
white, would have done credit to a per
former on the flying trapeze. At last he
came to his trap-door, and, finding that
it had been opened, he went down. On
entering his bed-room, he saw a man
turning down the gas. As soon as he
shouted "thieves," the man also shouted,
and the woman in the room gave a wild
and awful yell. Then the man turned
up the gas and seized a pistol, and ait
Merriweather dashed down stairs he
perceived that he had got into the wrong
house. As he flew to the parlor and
hid under the sofa, the other man woke
the whole neighborhood with a rattle,
and in ten minutes six policemen came
in, and after a search dragged Merri
weather out and dragged him to the
station bouse. When he came out in
the morning he walked home In a pair
of the turnkey's pants, and began to eat
his breakfast without asking ft blesaing,
and when Mrs. Merriweather inquired
whether his muttered ejaculations,
"fool" and "idiot," referred to her, he
said she might wear them if they tit her.
He will probably not play any fresh
practical jokes on Mrs. Merriweather
soon again.
