OT" The plantation negroes were en

were missing, though no one had been

there was foul play going on, and ob

had a peculiar way every now and then
of jerking his foot up to his hand, called

The minister dropped in very
suddenly at Deacon Ophiltree's, and
found that excellent man sitting at a

trying to hide a handful of cards In his

were four straight chalk marks on the
table, and near Mr. Laverlck there were
six. " Ah ! good-evening, elder good
evening," said the deacon, with great
cordiality. "We were just looking at
the new shades in red and black : odd
sample cards those print houses send out,
ain't they?" But the elder sighed, aud
said he didn't know much about print!
