t A Perilous Position.
During the progress or the fire nt the
AWulcnn thentre In Philadelphia, on Bmi
day morning a week it wan ascertained
that Frederick Neuman, of the Are patrol,
was in the ruins. Search was instituted,
and he could plainly be seen, but it was
impossible to reach him. He was held
down, lying upon his baclt, by a girder
which hud caughtMiim about the shoulder.
On the top of this was an immense pile of
debris. He was called to and answered.
A. number of men wanted to go into the
building to rescue him, but the captain of
the patrol held them back, fciriyg that
more lives might be aacrifled, the walls
bolug momentarily expected to fall.
At oue time the debris piled upon Neu
man caught tire, and the flames were
within a yard of him. A stream of water
was put upon it, and he was saved from
the horiible fate of being burned alive.
About three hours afterward, ho having
beon called to and answering cheerily to
bis comrades, ho called out, "It's all up,
boys j N. G. no good P Shortly after
this, however, the fire was subdued, and
Meveral of the insurance patrol worked
their way to where he was lying. It was
impossible to extricate him, as it was
feared that if oven a single plank was re
moved the wholo pile would fall and cruBU
. fiiui to death. In the meantime the . poor
- fellow showed immense fortitude. A drink
of liquor was passed to him, but be refused
it. Then some beef tea waspaBsed to him,
which be drank, and it was given him at
intervals until between eight and nine
o'clock in the morning, when he was libera
ted. About ten minutes before he was released
lie fainted, and when taken out be was
unconscious. He was immediately taken
to the Pennsylvania hospital, and at a late
. bour the next evening was doing remark
ably well j the physicians, after a careful
diagnosis, giving it as their opinion that he
was suffering only from exhaustion.
Excitement In Nova Scotia.
Halifax, Feb. 2ft. Tho question of
precedence having arisen botweeu certain
Queeu's counsel, an affidavit was read in
the Supreme Court on Saturday setting
forth that the soal'attached to the commis
sion of Queen's counsel appointed by tho
local Government, was not the great seal
of the Province, but the old seal which was
ordered to be returned by tho Imperial
Government in 1809. The Premier of the
local Government admitted the Government
had been using the old seal. The Court
expressed astonishment at such cou tempt
for Her Majesty's authorized and expressed
opinion, and said that nil acts requiring
the great seal dono since 18C9 were totally
void.
' This state of aftairs leaves Nova Hcotia
to-day without a Parliament and without
a Govermnout, with all grants of marriage
licenses, consequently marriages, and all
commissions siuce 1809 totally void. Tho
greatest excitement prevails In consequence.
The Chief Justice, after intimating that it
would require imperial legislation to recti
fy tho matter, adjourned the court for ton
days for a full inquiry.
V Two Men Killed and Four Injured.
Monday morning a scaffolding in tho
blast furnaco of tho , Bethlehem Iron
Company's works at Retblehem, on which
i.eveu men were at work, gave way. Six
of the men fell to the bottom, a distance
of seventy feet, two of them, Charles
Meyer, of Iiitteisville, Pa., and Hejjry
Kichline, of Uethlehem, being instautly
killed, aud the other four seriously wound
ed. Two of them will probably die. The
heventh man saved bis life by jumping
- from tho scaffolding on the top of the wall.
He was also badly injured by the falling
timbers. The following are the names of
the injured men : Charles Durn,of Saucon,
Pa.; George Nice, of Ilellertown, Pa. j Ja
cob Fogel, of Salisbury, Pa., aud Milton
Kepler, of Bethlehem, Pa.

Centennial Hotel, at ltutlor,- Pa., received
uews the other day that on aged aud
wealthy grandmother, who for many years
has been making her borne in New Orleans,
bad departed this life, bequeathing to him
her whole fortune, consisting of f 000,000
worth of real estate and $30,000 money.
