JAMES A. MADARA
James A. Madara, 46,
of 70S West Main Street,
Mount Joy, a former Mount
Joy borough councilman,
died in York Memorial Os-
teopathic Hospital’s emer-
gency room at 11:42 a.m.,
Wednesday, following an
apparent heart attack.
Madara, who reportedly
had no previous history of
heart trouble, was taken ill
at work at Motter Printing
Press Co., York, where he
was an assembler.
A hospital spokesman in
York said an autopsy had
been ordered because Ma-
dara was not under hospital
care prior to his arrival at
the emergency room, but
the spokesman added that
death was apparently due to
a heart attack.
Madara, a Republican,
was a member of Mount Joy
borough council for 12
years, resigning his council
position in November, 1974,
citing business pressures as
the reason.
He continued to serve the
borough after leaving coun-
cil, however, accepting an
appointment to the bor-
ough’s zoning hearing
board.
While on council he
served for a time as
chairman of the public
safety committee.
He was a member of St.
Mary's Catholic Church,
and served on the church’s
advisory board for over 20
years.
Obituaries
He was also a member of
Florin Fire Company,
Mount Joy. He served two
years in the Marine Corps
during the Korean conflict.
Born in Shamokin, he was
a son of the late George and
Elva Osman Madare. He
had lived in Mount Joy for
the past 26 years.
Surviving are his widow,
Ruth Rentzel Madara, at
home and five children:
Lynn, wife of William
Sprecher, Tunkhannock;
Scott A., Mount Joy; and
Mark A., Gail A., and Hope
A. Madara, all at home.
Also surviving are four
brothers, William and John
Madara, both of Camp Hill;
Stuart Madara, Elizabeth-
town; and George Madara,
Warner Robbins, Ga.; and a
sister Lillian, wife of John
Sperla, St. Louis, Mo.
MRS. EARL F. JOHNS
Esther B. Johns, 68, of
115 North Fourth Street,
Columbia, died Saturday, at
the Columbia Hospital after
an illness of one week.
She was the wife of the .
late Earl F. Johns, who died
in 1967. She was born in
Philadelphia, the daughter
of the late Wilson G. and
Ada Brandt Bucher.
She was a member of St.
John’s Episcopal Church of
Marietta, where she was
organist for many years.
She taught piano in the

Nursing, class of 1933.
She is survived by a son
David A. Johns, Rochester,
N.Y.; three brothers, Alfred
R. Bucher, East Petersburg;
David B. Bucher, Millers-
ville R1; Wilson Bucher,
Columbia; three sisters,
Alberta B. McAloose, Roh-
erstown; Marian B. Weaver,
Columbia; and Elizabeth,
wife of Bernard H. Roth,
Lancaster.
MRS. HARLAN NOLT
Mrs. Nettie H. Nolt, 83,
died Monday at 4:15 a.m.,
at the Landis Homes Retire-
ment Community, Lititz R1,
after a short illness. She was
a former resident of Choco-
late Avenue, Mount Joy.
Born in Warwick Town-
ship, she was a daughter of
the late Benjamin and Lizzie
Leaman Hess. She was the
widow of Harlan G. Nolt
who died in 1955S. She was a
member of the Mount Joy
Mennonite Church.
Surviving are one daugh-
ter and two sons: Myrtle,
wife of Chester Bucher,
Manheim R1; Mervin Nolt,
Mount Joy, and Elvin Nolt,
Elizabethtown R1; 10 grand-
children; 11 great-grand-
children, and one brother,
Norman L. Hess, Lancaster.
MRS. MARY EBERLY
Mrs. Mary Detweler
Eberly, 71, of 121 North
Market Street, Mount Joy,
died Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.,
at her home following a
lengthy illness. She was the
wife of Park N. Eberly.
Born in Rapho Township,
she was a daughter of the
late Horace K. and Carrie
Risser Detwiler. She was a
member of the Mount Joy
Mennonite Church and
Mount Joy Leisure Club.
Mrs. Eberly and her hus-
band celebrated their SOth
wedding anniversary on
November 26.
Surviving in addition to
her husband are the follow-
ing children: Jean E. Eber-
ly, Lititz R3; James W., East
Petersburg; Jay M., Mount
Joy; Leroy D., Elizabeth-
town; Joyce L., wife of the
Rev. Dennis R. Kuhns,
Harmonsburg; Ronald R.,
Mount Joy; Donna Lee, wife
of David M. Lambert,
Denbigh, Va.; 12 grand-
children; one brother, Jo-
seph R. Detwiler, Mount
Joy; and a sister, Anna
Martha, wife of Graybill
Stauffer, Mount Joy R2.

John C. Derr, 64, 110
Columbia Avenue, Mount
. Joy, died at the Lancaster.»

where he had been a patient
for three weeks.
He was the husband of
Ruth Webb Derr. He was
born in Columbia, a son of
the late John H., and Susan
Kauffman, Derr.
He had been a resident of
Mount Joy for the past 12
years, and had lived in
Sporting Hill for most of his
life.
He was retired in 1970
from the Raybestos Man-
hattan Corp., U.S. Asbestos
Division, Manheim.
He was a member of the
United Textile Workers of
America, AFL-CIO, Local
No. 2590. He was a life
member of the Germania
Band Club, Manheim, and
VFW Post 5956, Manheim,
and had served in the U.S.
Army Air Corps during
World War II in the
European Theater of opera-
tions.
Besides his wife, he is
survived by two step-daugh-
ters, Dorothy H., wife of
Russell E. Chapin, Mount
Joy, Janet H., wife of C.
Richard Ziegler, Lancaster;
six grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren; a
brother, Jacob K. Derr,
Manheim RS; and three
sisters, Mrs. Edith D.
Ressler, Mount Joy, Mrs.
Blanche D. McClune, Man-
heim, and Mrs. Florence D.
Humphries, Lancaster.
MRS. M. PEIFER
Mrs. Harriet Peifer, 82,
of 612 West Main Street,
Mount Joy, died unexpectly
in her home at 3:30 p.m.,
Thursday. She had been
under a physician’s care.
She was the widow of
Martin Peifer.
Born in West Hempfield
Township, she was a daugh-
ter of the late Phares and
Susan Siegrist Greider. She
was a life-long county resi-
dent.
Mrs. Peifer was a mem-
ber of the Old Order of the
River Bethren Church.
She is survived by five
children: Emma, wife of
John Zinkand, Columbia;
Roy, York; Ruth, wife of
Andrew Musser, Mount
Joy; Mrs. Fanny Siegler,
Lancasters and Ida, wife of
Albert Kleiner, Mount Joy,
with whom she resided.
She is also survived by
nine grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, and a
sister, Mrs. Esther Mc-
Devitt, Columbia.
