December 17, 1975 Diversified Occupations Program (continued from page 4) personnel through a low- cost training program and at the same time, participate in a civic enterprise by sharing in the development of young men and women, many of who become profitable and useful citizens. Special Trainee Think of the trainee as a student-learner rather than just another new employee. This does not mean that special training is required or that the student will not be productive. However, the student is young, usually has had no vocational training and very little work experience, and is still going to school. The focus in training is broader than what it might be with an ordinary new employee. The student learns how a company operates, what are its different departments, and what occupations exist there. Employment is gear- ed to the student’s training needs and not merely for the sake of having a job. Selection and Scheduling Students are not assigned to an employer. They are referred for interviews where job vacancies exist. The employer interviews and hires or rejects appli- cants sent by the Coor- dinator. Once the employer has hired the student, it is expected that he will pro- vide continuous part-time employment throughout the school year, if the student’s work has been satisfactory. Benefits If the student-learner works thirty-five or more hours per week, he would normally be eligible for the regular employee benefits of his employer. If the student works less than thirty-five hours per week, the em- ployer decides if he wishes JUG MILK GALLON enn Dutch Cookies Box of 7 doz/$1.29 Farm Fresh Eggs Milk is a Natural! Hope- fully, the student-learner’s work will be satisfactory and that he will be offered permanent, full-time em- ployment after completing his schooling. By participating in the program, employers provide a service to the student, school, and community, but they also derive the benefit of acquiring new employees.
