Page 2—SUSQUEHANNA BULLETIN Letters to the editor Harry Wiggins replies to John Zeller Dear Editor: In reply to Mr. John E. Zeller’s letter to the editor, I would like to ask him why the Historical Society did not even bother to bid on the railroad property when it was offered for sale? I per- sonally know that the Historical Society, and at least one other member of the Society, received a certified letter from Penn. Central the same day that | received a certified letter for the Church of God from Penn. Central, stating the condition of bidding for the railroad property. The let- ters clearly stated the conditions for bidding. The property was offered to the highest bidder with a minimum bid set. No bid was forwarded to Penn. Central by the Historical Society or any of its members. Where were the concerned citizens and Mr. Zeller when this property was made available to them? Could it be that they were waiting for someone to buy it and then play Santa Claus? If Mr. Zeller and the concerned citizens were not interested enough to bid on the property when it was made available, then why all the concern and the tele- phone canvassing of council members at this point. Mr. Zeller also referred to gaining a few parking spaces at the expense of losing the building. For his information, there are many more cars per week parked on the railroad property by citizens of the community than by members of the church, and up to this point, may I add, free of charge. Many citizens do not even obey the signs that are posted for no parking on Sundays. To set the record straight, it looks as if we have been running a com- munity parking lot, which is something even the boro does not do. Weekdays, our lot looks like Grand Central Station. Mr. Zeller stated the church council looks to the community to support the church, yet they are not willing to serve the people of Mount Joy. The Church of God has been leasing this property from Penn. Central for several years and paying a sizeable rent while the community has been using it free. I wonder how long Mr. Zeller thinks the church would survive on a free handout basis. Also, for Mr. Zellers information, the church does not look to the community for support. The support comes from its Dr. Landis replies to Mary Hoffmaster Dear Editor: I am responding to Mary Hoffmaster’s request which appeared in your paper on December 10, 1975. Mr. Price submitted a letter of resignation through the proper channels on Friday, October 31, 1975. In it, he cited ‘‘personal reasons’’. That letter was subsequently read in public at the next meeting of the School Board. The Board's reaction is expressed in our answer to him , a copy of which is attached. 1. No one on the Board knew of his intention to resign, nor did the Board encourage him to do so. 2. In the December 10th edition of your paper, Mr. Price states, ‘‘A public dispute will only hurt Donegal Athletics.” I agree with him. 3. Mr. Price resigned for personal reasons, and the Board respected his wishes. There can be a dispute only in the minds of those who wish there to be one. 4. A man’s personal reasons are his own, and he has every right to keep them to himself. William B. Landis President Donegal School Board The following letter, dated November 24, 1975, was sent to Walter V. Price by the Donegal School Board. Dear Mr. Price: Your resignation as head coach of our high school wrestling team was submit- ted to the school board on November 20, 1975, and accepted with regret. A motion was made by Dr. Fellenbaum and seconded by Mr. Duke to also recognize your efforts and contributions to our district wrestling program during your 14 years of service. They asked that apprecia- tion for your tireless efforts and many hours of planning and preparation be expres- sed. The fact that you served in a leadership role in the planning and construction of the high school auxiliary gym (DIG) was also men- tioned, as well as your work with both graduates and elementary intramural wrestling programs. The school board has followed your recommenda- tion of appointing Mr. Funk to serve as your replacement as head wrestling coach for the 1975-76 season. Sincerely DONEGAL SCHOOL BOARD Secretary Lillian K. Fry own members. The Church of God does not canvass the community for funds as some organizations do to the churches. Perhaps if Mr. Zeller . and the concerned citizens would use the thousands and thousands of dollars that it would cost to restore the building for spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and winning lost souls for His Kingdon, then it is very possible that they would do much more good for their community. We as a church are not in real estate business or in the restoration business. We, as a church, have a much greater mission to fulfill. One other question: Where were the concerned citizens when the windows were being broken out and the place was being entered into and robbed of hardware and fixtures and, in general, being defaced? Even a fire was attemped. It was the church that bought the lumber to close all of the windows to keep anyone from being hurt and dimin- ishing the possibility of having a serious fire started. The station has been closed fifteen to twenty years and no one seemed to be con- cerned until the Church of God purchased it, and now we are being criticized for our action. It certainly would have been more Christian-like to have gotten permission from council members before publishing their names. Harry G. Wiggins Chairman of former R.R. property now property of Mount Joy Church of God Rheems Water Co. bought by National Utilities. Ralph J. Lomma, National Utilities, Inc.’s President, disclosed today that the firm has acquired the Rheems Water Company in Rheems, Pennsylvania. Purchase of the Lancaster Count utility, he said, brings to 24 total number of utilities owned and operated by the holding firm. Mr. Lomma reported that the Rheems Water Company supplies water to approximately 1,800 cus- tomers. Its supply of water is a series of interconnected deep wells which pump into a reservoir and then is gravity fed into town. Francis P. Bifano, Na- tional Utilities, Inc’s Vice President, reported that National Utilities, Inc. plans to increase its holdings sub- COUNTY WIDE Inc. stantially in Lancaster and the surrounding counties. He said there are a number of utilities he hopes to have under agreement before the year’s end with a target acquisition date sometime in the month of January. Alphonse R. Lomma, Ex- ecutive Vice President of the holding company, said plans are already underway to update the water treatment system at Rheems by in- stalling the most up-to-date equipment. He also stated that the reservoir will be refurbished and a system of telemetering devices will be installed to insure a suffic- ient supply of water. He also said that a long range plan is being developed so that all future water needs can be planned for well in advance. BUSINESS DIRECTORY ——= NEEDHELP? OR SERVICE?
