SIMON LANDIS
Simon B. Landis, teach-
er for 66 years in north-
western Lancaster County,
died Sunday evening at
Lehman’s Nursing Home,
Rheems, after a brief
illness. He was 100 years
old.
A graduate of Millersville
Normal School, Landis be-
gan teaching in 1905. He
taught at Rheems School
and also at five schools in
West Donegal Township,
four schools in Mount Joy
Township, one in Elizabeth-
town and 13 Summers at
Elizabethtown College.
During his years as a
teacher, he also tended his
West Donegal Township
farm called Mount Tunnel
and served as minister of
Elizabethtown Mennonite
Church from 1909 to 1933.
On July 3, in honor of his
100th birthday, he was
House of Representatives.
At his birthday party,
Landis took time to reminis-
ce with reporters.
A football fan all his life,
Landis had played the sport
84 years ago for Millersville
Normal School.
“I don’t feel much older,”’
Landis said in July, ‘“‘just in
my legs. I can’t play
football like I used to.”
Football was a lot tougher
in those days, he recalled.
‘“We didn’t have any.
helmets, shin guards, any of
that. They played to win.
You know, the way we used
to get the ball carrier was to
pile on him, then twist his
ankle so he couldn’t run any.
further.”
“When we played, 3S to
40 was a big crowd. We
played Columbia Iron Works
mostly. They messed us
up.”
Of his teaching career,
Landis said, ‘‘I taught
arithmetic, botany, physical
education, ancient history,
church history—can you
name anything 1 didn’t
teach? Whatever they
needed, I taught.”
Landis gave his advice for
a long life: ‘‘Breathing
deep—Ilots of fresh air.
Drink lots of fresh water.
Keep nicotine and alochol
out, and don’t worry. Worry
doesn’t help. You can’t be
concerned about things that
won't happen anyhow.”
He also had a motto for
life. ‘“We’re all living in the
biggest room in the world,”

EDWARD K. BROWN
Edward K. Brown, 55
years old division manager
of Sico Co., Mount Joy, died
at Lancaster General Hospi-
tal following a brief illness.
Brown, who lived on
Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy
R1, was a Navy veteran of
World War II and was a
member of Mount Joy
friendship Fire Company 1
and St. Luke’s Episcopal
Church, Mount Joy.
He attended Mount Joy
High School and Valley
Forge Military Academy.
Born in Mount Joy, he
was the son of Edna
Kauffman Brown, Mount
Joy Rl, and the late Elmer
S. Brown.
Surviving besides his
mother are two sons, James
E. Brown, Mount Joy, and
John C. Brown, Toms River,
N.J.; two grandchildren;
two sisters, Izella B., wife of
Roy L. Packer, Mount Joy
R1, and Ruth B., wife of
Clair W. Sharpe, Searcy,
Ark., and a brother, Robert
K. Brown, Mount Joy.
