min H. Purcell was the
guest at the Veterans Day
assembly at Donegal High
School on Tuesday.
Colonel Purcell was held
prisoner of war by the North
Vietnamese for more than
five years. All but five
months of that time was in
solitary confinement, with-
out the companionship of or
contact with other prisoners
of war.
The infantryman was
captured on February 8,
1968 following a helicopter
crash in Quang Tri Province.
At the time he was serving
as deputy commander of the
Danang Subarea Command
and executive officer of the
80th General Support Group
in Vietnam.
During his incarceration
Colonel Purcell twice escap-
ed and, in spite of his
captors’ predictable treat-
ment after such actions, he
was planning a third escape
when the announcement of
the release of prisoners of
war was made.
DID YOU HEAR....
Pat Abel, who owns the
Mack Brewery (and sells old
& new country wares &
antiques), is looking for old
photos or drawings of the
building to use for exhibit
during the Marietta Restor-
ation Tour of his shop next
month. The building at 139
E. Market Street, Marietta,
was also known as the old
garment factory, and the
bowling alley. Pat would
like to borrow photos. He
promises to return them
promptly after the tour.
Please call Pat at 426-1458,
or Mary at 426-3149.

If you like the idea of
having your cake and eat-
ing it too, the new 2.0-liter
Porsche 914 should be very
appealing.
Not only does this su-
perbly engineered sports
car get an incredible 29
miles to the gallon, but if
you figure in the fuel tank
capacity (16.4 gallons)
you could conceivably
travel from New York to
Washington and back on
one tank of gas!
