Mount Joy fire companies had a very busy schedule last week

Firemen pump out basement in Mount Joy
Bateman thanks organizations
citizens for help during flood

Mount Joy Borough Mana-
ger Joseph Bateman ex-
pressed his appreciation to
all the people and organiza-
tions who had assisted
during the flood on Friday.
He thanked the fire,
police and civil defense
departments for help in

directing traffic, the fire
department for pumping out
basements and rescuing one
family, stranded in their
trailer near the Cove.
Bateman said that citizens
responded helpfully to the
borough’s appeal to con-
serve water while the water
treatment plant was tempor-
arily disabled Friday.

It rained and rained, the
waters rose, the phones
rang, the sirens blew. That
is how it started Sunday,
September 21 and ended
Friday, September 26.
By 6 a.m. Friday, Sep-
tember 26, a three man crew
was answering phones as
fast as they could pick them
up at the Mount Joy Fire
and Ambulance Base.
Phones were also ringing at
the local fire stations. By
9 a.m. every fire company in
the northwestern part of
Lancaster County was busy.
Friendship and Florin
Companies in Mount Joy
began working as early as
7 a.m. pumping cellars.
Friendship Fire Co. No. 1
was the first to answer a
rescue call.
Seven children and two
adults were rescued from
rising waters in a mobile
home on Sportsmens Road
in Mount Joy at 9:20 a.m.

Area fire departments
answered numerous fire
calls related to the weather
such as oil burner fires. At
11:30 a.m. Rheems, Eliza-
bethtown, and Florin fire
departments answered a fire
call at Wengers Feed Mill in
Rheems. A minute later
Friendship, Mount Joy ,re-
sponded to an alarm on
Donegal Springs Road. Up-
on arrival, firemen found no
fire, just a basement full of
water. The last rescue call
for the local area came at
2:05 p.m. at the Jay
Gingrich residence on
Longenecker Road. It was
reported that two people
were in a two-story garage.
However, firemen weren't
needed. Apparently the
caller mistook them for
being stranded. Firemen
continued to pump cellars
until midnight when they
retired until 8:00 a.m.,
Saturday morning, Septem-
ber 27.
By late Saturday after-
‘noon most pump details
were completed. The Mount
oy Fire and Ambulance
Base reported taking over
4 150 pump calls for the
Mount Joy, Elizabethtown,
and Bainbridge areas. Calls
+1 also came into the local fire
| stations themselves.
A special note of thanks
should go to the firemen,
ambulance personnel, fire
police, and ladies’ auxiliar-
ies who came out in the
downpour to help their
fellow men.
