British fire at Rangers.

Surviving Rangers pursue retreating British troops.

Maytown war
Fighting raged all after-
noon in Maytown Square
last Sunday.
The trouble began when a
British officer tried to nail a
recruiting poster to the tulip
tree in the square.
Some hot-headed local
revolutionaries ran the
officer and his Loyalist
companions out of town.
Within minutes, the
entire Royal 64th Regiment
of Foot invaded the square.
In the ensuing battle, not
one British soldier was
killed. The Donegal Rangers
sustained heavy casualties,
but held the town.
No one can explain why
His Majesty’s troops left
the field before a single
British soldier was
wounded. According to one
rumor, the cost of dry-
cleaning the King’s uniform
is so high that the troops
cannot afford to fall down.
Following the battle, the
Bainbridge Band struck up
“The Star Spangled Ban-
ner’’.
The day’s events also
included tours of historic
Maytown houses, and sing-
ing by an old-fashioned
choir at St. John’s Lutheran
Church.
About 800 people bought
tickets for the tour of
historic homes.
Nighttime test
of MJ sewers
Joseph S. Bateman, Ad-
ministrator of the Mount Joy
Borough Authority has giv-
en notice to all Mount Joy
Borough residents that be-
ginning approximately Sep-
tember 22 and running for
approximately five weeks,
Gannett Fleming Corddry &
Carpenter, Inc. will be
running tests on all sewers
and manholes in the Bo-
rough during the night from
I1 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the
Mount Joy Borough Autho-
rity.
Mr. Bateman hopes that
this will not cause any
inconvience to anyone. The
Police Department will be
advised of the situation. If
there are any questions
concerning the matter, call
the Borough Office at
653-5938.
