Donegal Braves midgets open football season
Donegal Braves Midget
Football Opens Play

The Donegal Braves
Midget Football teams
opened their 1975 cam-
paigns with exhibitions
against [Eastern York
County on EYC’s field on
Sunday, the 24th. ,
The ‘“C’ team opened
with a rush scoring on a SS
yard TD run by Brian
Carbaugh only to have the
score nullified by a penalty.
The offense led by Tom
Lucabaugh, Bill Miller,
Daryl Risberg and Carbaugh
were stymied time and
again by penalties, fumbles
and interceptions and were
unable to get on the
scoreboard. Meanwhile, the
defense led by Risberg, Eric
Brenner, and John Yohe
kept their opponents bottled
up throughout the contest
and likewise refused to
permit a score. Although
the Braves outplayed EYC
the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
The ‘““‘B” team followed
with a very exciting game
which saw them pull out a
13-12 victory in the last
quarter. After being down
0-12 at half-time, the Braves
came roaring back on the
passing duo of Todd Butz
and Darin Kolp. Five pass
completions climaxed by a
S-yard TD toss got Donegal
on the board. Duane
Musser then scampered
around end for the all-
important extra point and
the Braves trailed 12-7.
When Jim Perry recovered a
fumble inside the 10 yard
line, the Braves took advan-
tage and Butz sneaked over
for the score and Donegal
led 13-12. On the next
kick-off, Musser recovered a
fumble to seal the victory.

The defense led by Kolp,
Mike Rapp, Bill Dishart,
Rodney Fellenbaum and
Mike McConnell, who also
recovered a fumble, threw
up a stone wall in the second
half and kept the losers at
bay.
The ‘“A’’ team suffered a
22-6 defeat when EYC
scored two quick TD’s late
in the fourth quarter to
break up a tight 8-6 ball
game. After EYC opened
the scoring midway through
the second quarter, Steve
Meszaros scooted 15 yards
around the end to narrow
the gap to 8-6. Steve Butz,
Steve Neal, Frank Brommer
and Casey Krady spear-
headed a somewhat sputter-
ing offense which just
couldn’t get it all together.
On defense, Leonard
Mummau, Jeff Kauffman,
Jeff Duke, Jody Longe-
necker, Butz and Krady held
fairly well until the late EYC
surge when a long pass set
up one score and a blocked
punt set up another.
Play Spartans

On Sunday, the 31st, the
Donegal Braves hosted the
Garden Spot Spartans at the
DHS field in a pre-season
football game. The ‘‘B”
team got things underway,
but took a 25-0 drubbing.
The offense led by Todd
Butz, Darin Kolp, Duane
Musser, Ron Kennedy, and
Scott Snyder were unable to
penetrate the Spartan de-
fense. Time and again Butz
was flattened while attemp-
ting to pass and the running
attack netted very little.
Meanwhile, the defense led
by Leroy Claar, who recov-
ered a fumble, Rodney
Fellenbaum, Jim Perry,
Tom Burger, and Bill

Dishart were victimized by a
swift trio of backs who swept
the ends with comparative
ease. Let’s hope they get
back on the track for next
weeks season opener.
The “A” team reversed
the tables and scored an
impressive 23-0 win. Casey
Krady got things started
with a 4 yard plunge for the
score late in the first period,
Steve Butz added the PAT
on a quarterback keeper and
Donegal led 7-0. In the
second quarter a Butz to
Steve Meszaros pass for 36
yards upped the margin to
13-0. A pass from Meszaros
to Butz added the 2-point
conversion and the score
read 15-0. Also in this
period Steve Neal and Casey
Krady each intercepted pas-
ses to thwart the Spartans.
Excitement reached fever
pitch when Steve Neal took
the opening 2nd half kickoff
in full stride and raced 70
yards for the score and a
21-0 lead. Another Meszar-
os to Butz pass added the
2-point PAT and the Braves
led 23-0. In between all this
Donegal scoring, the de-
fense anchored by Jeff
Kauffman, Frank Brommer,
Phil Spickler, Cory Heisey,
Phil Landis, and Greg
Laughlin threw up a stone
wall which the visitors were
unable to dent.
The *“C’’ team concluded
a successful afternoon by
romping to a 26-0 victory
over Eastern York County’s
team (Garden Spot does not
have a “C’’ team). Last
week EYC and Donegal
battled to a 0-0 tie, but this
week the Braves were not to
be denied. Brian Carbaugh
scored twice in the first
quarter on S0 and 25 yard
runs. Both times Daryl
Risberg added the PAT on
line plunges and Donegal
led 14-0 by the end of the
quarter. Risberg upped the
tally to 20-0 with a 20 yard
run in the second quarter
and Carbaugh raced for

another score on a 15 yard
run in the last quarter to
make the score 26-0. The
defense led by Gilbert
Cornwell, who recovered
two fumbles, Kevin Fantom,
Scott Hostetter, John Yohe,
and Risberg completely shut
down the visitors offense.
In fact, the visitors only ran
one series the entire third
quarter! !
Next Sunday, the 7th the
Braves open the regular
season by traveling to
Lincoln Jr. High in Lancas-
ter to battle the C&D
Chargers at 1:00 P.M.
