Friendship firemen battle blaze on Henry Street
Fire on Henry St., Mount Joy
by Bill Martin
An overloaded circuit was
the cause of a fire that
damaged a 2 1/2 story
double house on Henry
Street in Mount Joy, Satur-
day, August 23.
Mrs. William Cox, 11 S.
Market Street, discovered
and reported the fire at
2:58 p.m.
When firemen arrived,
smoke was pouring from a
rear second floor bedroom
window on one side of the
house. The fire, which was
described as very hot, was
extinguished quickly after
the roof was ventilated.
County Fire Marshall,
Paul Knier, stated the fire
started in wiring near a
receptacle in the wall of the
rear bedroom because of an
electical overload.
The second floor was
extensively damaged and
the attic had moderate
damage. The estimated
damage to the building was
listed at $13,000.00 by

able for the contents.
Firemen were credited
with their quick response in
saving the remainder of the
house. There was slight
water and smoke damage on
the first floor. Salvage
covers were placed on the
rug and over the furniture.
The other 1/2 of the house,
occupied by Mary Keck, was
described as in good shape
with only very minor smoke
damage to clothing.
The Mount Joy Ambu-
lance crew treated Dennis
Fackler, Leo Shank, and
Doug Estock for minor
smoke inhalation. Mrs. Ei-
leen Teleky, who was in her
house at the time escaped
the fire without injury.
Firemen were in atten-
dance four hours. Cold
drinks were provided by the
neighbors and Ladies Auxil-
iary. Mount Joy and Florin
Fire Departments respond-
ed to the blaze with
approximately 60 men.
