Well informed tour guides explain the
many facets of brewing in the upper and
lower levels of Lancaster County's oldest
brewery. Giant vats are still in place within
the Lagering Cellar. The fermented brew was
placed in wooden casks in order to age for a
period of 30 days before being drawn off into
smaller kegs which were stored 43 feet below the
street surface. Temperature remains around 50 de-
grees year around in the Catacombs.

Holstein Day at Shellenbergers,
mammoth cake depicts event

. and Mrs. Shelley Shellenberger
Last Thursday was Hol-
stein Field Day at the farm
of Mr. and Mrs. Shelley
Shellenberger, Mount Joy,
R.D. 1
The annual event is
sponsored by the Lancaster
County Holstein Associa-
tion.
The Shellenbergers were
hosts for the day to more
than 200 people, who came
for the friendly fun and
food, an also to learn more
about judging Holstein cat-
tle.
The excellent menu
served included plenty of
barbecued chicken. A good
portion of the dessert was
provided by Lee (Mrs.
James) Bickford, who baked
a 4 by 2 foot cake decorated
with a Holstein cow against
a green meadow and blue
sky.
