football pla yer, dies

John Haines
John A. Haines, 17, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John 8S.
Haines, Maytown, died last
Tuesday night in an auto-
mobile accident near May-
town.
Haines would have been a
senior at Donegal High
School this fall, where he
undoubtedly would have
played football again. He
was an outstanding member
of last year’s team, and
would have been a strong
asset this year.
Meeting for
mothers, 13th
There will be no official
meeting of the Elizabeth-
town—Mount Joy group of
La Leche League in August.
Instead there will be a
mothers’ meeting to discuss
and share whatever mother-
ing subjects the group
desires. It will be held
Wednesday, August 13 at
7:30 p.m. in the meeting
room at Norlanco Family
Health Center. Any woman
interested in learning more
about good mothering is
welcome to attend. For more

Bicentennial
meets Aug. 7
The Bicentennial Com-
mittee of Marietta and East
Donegal will meet Thurs-
day, August 7, at 7:30, at
the Community House in
Marietta.
Regular meetings will be
held on the first Thursday of
every month at 7:30.
The Susquehanna Bulle-
tin took the accompanying
photograph of him last
October after he had scored
Donegal’s lone touchdown
by catching a pass from
Kevin Bradley in a game
against Elizabethtown.
An end on the football
team, Haines played first
base’ and outfield in base-
ball. John Haines’ interest
in sports began early. In the
seventh grade he played
football with the Donegal
Braves. He was a member
of the Varsity Club.
In seventh, eighth, and
ninth grades he was a
member of the Student
Council, and was vice=resi-
dent of the Council in eighth
grade.
He was also a May Queen
escort in the eighth grade.
He was a member of the
Marietta United Church of
Christ.
In addition to his parents,
he is survived by a sister,
Terry Lynn, a half-brother,
Marlin Emswiler, and his
grandmother, Mrs. Anna
Brayman of Centerville.
Jaycees bring circus to
The Mount Joy Jaycees
will sponsor the Lewis
Brothers Circus on Wednes-
day, August 20, with two
performances at 6 and 8
p-m. in the boro Park.
Tickets are now on sale at
Sloan's Pharmacy and Jack
Horner's Shoe store.

Burned down Breneman barn
Breneman barn burns

A spectacular fire totally
destroyed the Eli Breneman
barn Monday night, July 28,
on Chiques Road (east of
Milton Grove) in Rapho
Township. Flames could be
seen as far away as the
North side of Mount Joy.
County Fire Marshal Paul
Knier stated the cause of the
fire was a light bulb which
accidentally contacted dry
straw. Members of the
family were unloading hay
into the barn when the fire
broke out. All the animals in
the barn were saved.
Mastersonville, Mount
Lewis Brothers is an
old-time circus with a tent
that can hold an audience of
2000.
Its elephant heard includes
Myrtle, the largest perfor-
ming elephant in America.
Miss Felici and Miss
Leanne are the circus’
trapeze artists.
Six Canistrellis from Italy
perform acrobatics.

Joy, Florin, Elizabethtown,
and Lawn companies fought
the blaze. Rheems and
Manheim fire companies
were called to standby.
Damage was listed at 50,000
dollars.
Mount Joy responded
with forty five men. The
Company was in service five
hours and twenty-five
minutes.
Wednesday, July 30,
Friendship Fire Company
responded to a smoke
investigation at the Lancas-
ter Leaf Tobacco Warehouse
in the borough. There was
no fire. The company was in
service 14 minutes.

Tuesday afternoon the
kids travelled to Maytown
for a kickball game which
Maytown won 11.9. The
Marietta girls lost a close
softball game to Columbia,
10-7, Thursday afternoon.
Gimp and Popsicle sticks
were popular this week with
many of the children. Next
week colored pencil draw-
ngs will be featured.

The Lancaster County
Firemen’s Association held
its second training session
of the summer on July 26
and 27 at the county fire
training grounds near Lam-
peter. The course, Fire
Fighting II, involved five
subjects—
1. Six hours of vehicle
rescue was taught by two
instructors from the Dela-
ware State Fire School.
Students were instructed in
the use of basic rescue tools.
They were shown how to
unlock car doors, stabilize
an over-turned vehicle, cut
holes in roof and floor of
vehicles, and pull steering
wheels ‘and floor pedals
from a trapped person.
2. Three hours were spent
teaching the uses and
support of sprinklers. Fire-
men were taught the use
and support of dry and wer
sprinkler systems. A field
trip was made to Lampeter
Plastics to observe their
sprinkler system.
3. Six hours of instruction
on hose lines, nozzles and
accesories involved instruc.

also shown the use of
preconnects and deluge
guns.
4. Instruction on water
supply with large diameter
hoses lasted three hours.
Firemen worked with ,
three inch and four inch
hose which is used to supply
apparatus at the scene of a
major fire.
5. Rural firefighting was
taught three hours and
involved the use of tanker
shuttles, relays, fold-a-
tanks, and portable pumps.
