Queen of the Fair to be chosen
for Bainbridge Labor Day fest
by Hazel Baker
Four Bainbridge area
sixth grade pupils are vying
for the ‘““Queen of the Fair”
title. The benefit will be
held Labor Day on the
Bainbridge Fire Company
grounds.The contestants are
soliciting votes at one cent
each in four cooperating
establishments.
Mrs. James Smith and
Mrs. William Smith are
serving as advisors for the
candidates who are spon-
sored by the Ladies Auxil-
iary to the Bainbridge Fire
Company.
One of the following girls
will be crowned ‘‘Queen’’ at
the annual event: Michele
Retherford, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Albert Retherford;
Diane Lokey, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Lokey;
Tammy Minnich, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. David
Minnich; and Dawn Nau-
man, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Gene Nauman.
Cooperating shops where
votes can be placed are

The water strider is a
small but deadly hunting
machine. It glides over
ponds and streams like a
six-legged ice skater. Water
repelling hairs on the water
strider’s feet keep it high
and dry. It darts over the
surface film, looking for
prey.
Like his relative, the
bedbug, the water strider
pierces victims with a
hypodermic snout, then
sucks their body juices.
Insects and crustaceans,
drifting just below the
surface, can’t seem to sense
the water strider’s fast
