Local scouts attack
Three Marietta - Maytown
area scouts and their leaders
arrived June 28, 1975S at
Philmont Scout Ranch and
Explorer Base in Cimarron,
N.M. It is the national Boy
Scouts of America 214-
square mile camp in the
Sangre de Cristo range of
the Rocky Mountains.
The scouts, under the
leadership of Issac Stud-
holm, Marietta, spent 10
days on the trail as part of
their 12-day trek at Philmont
Scout Ranch and Explorer

Base. They participated in
most of the programs
offered in 21 staffed moun-
tain camps. These pro-
grams include burro-
packing, horseback riding,
gold panning and mining,
lumbering, fly tying and
fishing, rock climbing, eco-
logy, archaeology, bow-
hunting, foxfire, mountain
search and rescue, moun-
taineering, orienteering,
survival, and western lore.

southwest wilderness
Runkle, of Troop 93 Mari-
etta and Troop 85, Eliza-
bethtown, are part of the
15,000 scouts who hiked the
rugged trails of the ranch
this summer.
Before hitting the trail,
the scouts received exten-
sive training in wilderness
camping and cookery,
orienteering, backpacking,
hiking, and conservation
from Philmont’s Ranger
staff. After training, the


Marietta - Maytown scouts
on their own, hiked between
S0 and 80 miles in ten days.
The scouts spent their last
day at Philmont at Camping
Headquarters where they
enjoyed the luxuries of a
““hot’’ shower and a ‘‘real”’
meal. On the trip to
Philmont, the scouts visited
Airforce Academy at Colo-
rado Springs, and the
toshare Indian Kiva La
Juata Colorado.

their troop.

Patrol, and Donald Kelly,

out at Order of the Arrow
ceremonies.

The scouts and leaders of
the troop enjoyed peach and
blueberry cobbler, prepared
in camp and cooked in the
dutch oven by the troop, as
late evening snacks.
Elmer Dennis said, ‘The
