Citizens thank Council
At a special meeting
Mount Joy Borough Coun-
cil adopted a new zoning
ordinance last Wednesday
night, April 23, after mak-
ing various changes in the
law to comply with citizens’
wishes and criticisms of the
original draft of the ordin-
ance.
At the conclusion of the
meeting a number of citi-
zens who had been protest-
ing against certain aspects of
the original draft of the or-
dinance, complimented and
thanked the Council for its
consideration of their wish-
es.
Council made the follow-
ing changes in the zoning
ordinance:
Extended the Florin
Heights low density develop-
ment south to Bernhard
Avenue;
eliminated conditional
and - special uses from all
low-density low residential
areas;
made townhouses accep-

table in high-density resi-
dential areas;
defined as low residen-
tial six blocks south of Rich-
land Lane and S. Alley and
west of Delta Street;
limited planned residen-
tial development in medium-
density areas to no more
than 10 per cent apartment
dwellings and 20 per cent
townhouses and condomin-
iums.
Council also:
reappointed borough
manager Joseph Bateman as
zoning hearing officer;
appointed Albert J. Klein-
er, James A. Madara, and
Kenneth Gainer as members
of the zoning hearing board;
approved a fee scale for
building permits, signs and
fences, special zoning ex-
ceptions and amendments.
A petition was submitted
to the Council from resi-
dents of Chocolate Avenue
protesting the parking of a
furniture van along their
street.

A very useful course in
baby-sitting is being con-
ducted for sixth graders by
Mrs. Alethia White at May-
town Elementary School.
The course was instituted
by popular demand of the
students. Each week an ex-
pert comes in and gives the
baby-sitters in training, some

Last week Mrs. Linda
Boozer, reading expert in
the Donegal schools, told
the baby-sitters about the
personalities and interests
of children not too much
younger than themselves.
Mrs. Boozer was full of use-
ful suggestions for games
and diversions for sittees.
Next week Mount Joy
Fire Chief will instruct the
baby-sitters in fire safety
and what to do in case of
possible emergencies.
The program is following
the one set up by the Mount
Joy Joycee-ettes.

Cast of "Smokey Wins a Star”
An Arbor Day ceremony
at Grandview Elementary
School last week included a
play about fire safety in the
woods called “Smokey
(Bear) Wins a Star,” and
the planting of trees in
honor of retired teachers.
The program was the

work of Mrs. Zella Rehrer’s
class.
Trees were planted in
honor of Mrs. Mabel Bucher,
Mrs. Mary Kauffman, Dr.
Ralph Coleman, Mrs. Anne
Hollinger, and Miss Anna
Mae Eby.
