Auction in Marietta
An auction, according to
Webster, is a public sale of
property to the highest
bidder, by a licensed person
for that purpose. To laymen
an auction is a social event
where one meets acquaint-
ances, a bargain center
where one gets a treasure at
a portion of its original cost.
To a dealer in second hand
furniture, it is the answer to
a long search for just the
right accessory. To an
antique dealer an auction
affords a rare buy, to
children its the place to
romp with friends and
choose foods or sweets to
satisfy a crave but to the
seller its an organized means
by which to dispose of
properties at a fair exchange
in an appointed span of time.
An auction was held for
two days this week in
Marietta when the estate of
the late Miss Frances
Reinhold was sold. Buyers
came from Texas, W. Vir-
ginia, and New Jersey, as
well as from the vicinity.
Bidders were happy with
their purchases; some were
unhappy or disappointed
because of losing a bid or
having to pay a price higher

than they had wanted. The
items sold were the acquisi-
tions of at least three
generations, and as a rule
were in top condition.
Many former residents,
relatives and associates of
the seller returned for the
event conducted by Cones-
toga Auction Company, Inc.,
Manheim, R. D. 1 with J.
Donald Longenecker and
Walter L. Bomberger, Jr.,
as auctioneers.
The piece bringing the
highest price was a cherry
two-part cupboard at $2,750.
A china 16” rose medallion
punch bowl went for $610,
while about 50 ladies hand-
bags sold for the song of $1.
Collectors of stamps, politi-
cal memorabillia, bisque
dolls, silver service, cut
glass and antique jewelry
had a heyday. More than 300
persons registered for the
numbers necessary to iden-
tify the purchasers; how-
ever, many persons used the
same identification number.
Perfect weather held forth
for the 9 a.m. to midnight
sale Monday and 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Tuesday event.
To many people an auction
is a way of life.
