The fifth annual Opera-
tion Frozen Trail, winter ex-
_ercise for Boy Scout patrols
of the Western District, will
be held Saturday, January
18, at J. Edward Mack Scout
Reservation north of Brick-
erville.
About 400 Scouts and
adult leaders are expected
to take part. They repre-
sent Scout units from Lan-
caster, Columbia, Elizabeth-
town, Mount Joy, Manheim,
Mountville, Silver Springs,
Rohrerstown, Landisville,
Maytown, Marietta, and
other areas of Lancaster Co.
The public is invited to
attend the Frozen Trail com-
petition, which will begin
with registration at 9 a.m.
January 18. About half an
hour later, the Scout patrols
will be on the trail, each at-
tempting to outdo the others
in completing a rugged cross-
country race while overcom-
ing obstacles along the way
to the destination.
Each patrol uses a sled,
cart, travois or palaquin that
its members have construc-
ted themselves. The patrol
members serve as “sled dogs”
to propel it to the finish
line, across snow, ice, or

bare ground. As they make
their trek, the competing
patrols are given problems
that can be solved by using
a variety of scouting or
woodlands skills-such as
map "and compass reading,
first aid, and the techniques
of crossing rough terrain.
Donald W. Peters, Colum-
bia, is chairman of the 1975
Frozen Trail event. Arthur
C. ‘Lord, Lancaster, is pro-
gram chairman for the West-
ern District. Also assisting
with arrangements are Ro-
bert M. Rogers, East Peters-
burg, Western District chair-
man for Scouting, and Clay-
ton Garrett, Jr., Manheim,
district scout executive.
Scouts and leaders who
participate in the 1975 Op-
eration Frozen Trail will re-
ceive specially designed pat-
ches to wear on their uni-
forms. They can earn “Po-
lar bear hero” strips to wear
with the patches by camp-
ing out at Mack Scout Re-
servation on Friday night,
January 17, then taking part
in the competition the fol-
lowing day.
The 1974 Frozen Trail
competition was won by the
Viking patrol of Troop 129,
Rohrerstown.
