service at which families
may gather to sing carols,
heat a meditation, and light
candles.
The Junior Choir, directed
by Mrs. Donald Whitesel,
will lead in the singing of the
carols and sing two anthems.
The Christ Child will be
blessed at the Altar and then
carried to the creche to be
placed there by one of the
younger children. This
service will conclude with
the singing of Happy Bir-
thday to Jesus, and the
congregation singing ‘‘Silent
Night” in the candle-lighted
church. Each child attending
will be given a piece of the
Christ Child’s birthday cake
as he leaves the church.
The Festival Choral
Eucharist and meditation
will begin at 11:30 p.m. on
Christmas Eve. This service
consists of Holy Communion,
several carols sung by the
congregation and special
music by the Senior Choir,
directed by Mrs. Kenneth
Warren. The congregation
will join in singing ‘‘Silent
Night” in the candle-lighted
church. The Parish Lay
Readers will assist in the
service.
The Rev. Donald Whitesel,
rector, will officiate at all the
services. Dr. David
Schlosser, organist, will
provide special music.
On Christmas Day, at 9
a.m. , there will be a service
of Holy Communion. There is
no music or sermon at this
service.
An invitation is extended
to the public to attend any of
the services.
St. Mark's to Hold
Two Services
Christmas Eve
There will be two
Christmas Eve Candlelight
Services this year at St.
Mark’s United Methodist
Church.
The Family Service will be
at 7:30 p.m. with organ
music beginning at 7:15. The
late Service is to be from 11
p.m. to midnight. The
program will not be iden-
tical.
Three choirs, the Cherub,
the Celestial, and the
Chancel, will have part in the
earlier service. The Cherub
Choir will sing “Do You
Know This Friend of Mine?”
(Anonymous) and ‘“‘Away in
a Manger’ by James
Murray. The Celestial Choir
will offer ‘‘Lu-Li-Lu-La” by
Carlson and “O What a
Wonder” by Joyce Eilers.
The Chancel Choir will
render “Up, O Shepherds”
(a Tyrolean Carol arr. by
Schroeder), ‘‘Remember”’
by John Gardner, and “And
the Glory of the Lord’ from
‘The Messiah’ by Handel. A
women’s chorus from the
Chancel Choir will perform
two works: “To Shepherds
Fast Asleep’ by Davis and
“There Is No Rose’ from
Benjamin Britten's ‘A
Ceremony of Carols.’ The
combined choirs join in a
presentation of ‘“‘Slumber, O
Holy Jesus” by Dale Wood.
The congregation will join
in the celebration of Christ’s
Birth by voicing the carols,
“O Come, All Ye Faithful,”
“What Child Is This?’ “The
First Nowell,” and ‘Silent
Night.” The latter will be
sung when the entire sanc-
tuary is bathed in can-
dlelight.
Performing for the first
time at this service will be a
newly-formed recorder
ensemble. They will play
“Silent Night’ during the
distribution of the light.
Organ music for the 7:30
Service includes ‘‘O Hail
This Brightest Day of Days’’
by Bach, ‘“Pastorale’’ by
Zipoli, “God Rest Ye Merry
Gentlemen’ by Held and
“Noel, with variations’ by
Balbastre. The Offertory will
be an organ-recorder duet
entitled ‘A Little Shepherd
Music’’ by Rohlig. Miss
Marilyn Strominger will
play the recorder with Mr.
Gerald Miller, organist.
The pastor, W. Richard
Kohler, will direct the
worship experience and
bring a brief Christmas Eve
message.
The Candlelight Worship
at 11 p.m. will feature the
church’s Wesley Singers.
They will render the choral
prelude, “Of the Father's
Love Begotten” and two
other anthems. The hour will

suggest that worshippers
arrive well in advance of the

Calvary Church
To Present
Cantata Sunday
This Christmas season, the
Calvary Bible Church choir,
under the direction of Mrs.
Bernita Shelly, and the
Instrumental Ensemble,
directed by Art Baughman
will present John Peterson’s
cantata, “Night of
Miracles’’, on Sunday
evening, Dec. 22, beginning
at 7 o’clock.
In his cantata, Peterson
seeks to portray the miracle
birth — on ‘the night when
centuries-old prophesies
came true, a night when
shepherds were
awestricken.
Narrating the cantata will
be John Henry Brubaker.
The pianist will be Mrs.
Sandra Peters, with Mrs.
Margaret Hart at the organ.
Soloists include Mrs.
Connie Laughman, Donald
Wise, and Lewis Hart.
The instrumental en-
semble includes Mrs. Carol
Gockley, Bill Baughman,
Jr., Miss Brenda
Longenecker, Doug Shelly,
Doug Geltmacher, Art
Baughman, Keith Sheuing
and Mrs. Phyllis Baughman.
The public is invited.
Three Services
Sunday at Florin
Church of Brethren
The Florin Church of the
Brethren will observe
Christmas with several
special services.
Sunday, Dec. 22, all
Sunday School classes will
meet in the Fellowship Hall
at 9 am. for a special
program in which the
children will present their
gifts of school kits for others.
The Sunday School offering
will be dedicated .to this
purpose as well. An inspiring
film will be shown telling the
Christmas story.
In the Sunday Worship
Service, at 10 o'clock, all
three of the church choirs
will sing. There will be a
special Baby Consecration
service and a Christmas
Achievement offering for
others. The pastor will bring
the message, ‘“‘God’s Gift,
Christ’s Gift, and Ours’’. The
Sanctuary is decorated in the
Christmas motif with
poinsettias, evergreens and
candles, with a life-size
manger scene in the chancel.

first of its kind in the Florin
Church and every effort is
being made to make this a
meaningful and inspiring

conclude with a candle-light
service following a bread
and cup communion for

The Senior Choir of the
Mount Joy Church of God
will present the Christmas
Cantata, “When Love Was
Born’ by Van Denman
Thompson, Sunday, Dec. 22,
at 10 a.m. The text of the
cantata is based on scripture
and hymns and tells the
Christmas story from its
prophecy to. its fulfillment,
opening with ‘Prepare Ye
the Way of the Lord” and
closing with ‘‘Songs of Joy.”
Special parts include:
“Fear Thou Not’, bass solo
by Joe Snyder, ‘I Sing of a
Maid,” soprano soloist —
Nicola Markley, ‘‘The
Shepherds and the Angels”,
Cory Funk, tenor soloist and
“To Thee My Heart I Offer”,
contralto soloist, Barbara
Weidman. Other members of
the choir are Ethel
Beamenderfer, Betty
Charles, Pat English, Mae
Greider, Grace Hawthorne,
