About six weeks or so ago
the cast was taken off and
life was returning to normal
for the Donegal high school
senior.

But, a few days ago he was
playing soccer. As goalie he
tandled with a threatening
scorer and in the entanglement,
he broke his leg.

This time it will be maybe
four months before he is
back in action — missing

Recently, you read in the
papers about a load of U.S.
mail burning along a high-
way? The remains were
taken to a rescue center and
everything which could be
salvaged was saved and sent
on to the person for whom it
was intended.

At least one piece of the
damaged mail arrived here for
the Mount Joy Rotary club.
Aithough almost al! of the
message had been charred
away, what was left had been
inserted in a new government
envelope and sent along for
whatever use the remaining
contents might be.

- Longenecker to Enter
Gloria Longenecker,
daughter of Lineaus
Longenecker, Manheim, has
been entered as a contestant
in the Lancaster County
Scholarship Pageant, to be
held at Ephrata.
Now a freshman at
Lebanon Valley college,
Gloria is a 1974 graduate of
Donegal high school, where
she probably was the most
versital musician ever to
participate at D.H.S.
The entry is sponsored by
the Mount Joy Jaycees.
Gloria makes home on
Fairview street with her
grandmother, Mrs. W. Lloyd
Billow, and her sister and
husband, Glen and Sylvia
(Longenecker) Weaver.
While in high school,
Gloria was a member of the
chorus, band, Booster Club,
Youth Education
association, yearbook
committee and the National
Honor Society.
Gifted with a ranging
soprano voice, she had the
female lead in Donegal’s
production last school year
of ‘Brigadoon’.
She also participated in
county, regional and district
band, chorus and orchestra.
At Lebanon Valley she is
majoring in voice and flute.
The Lancaster County
Scholarship Pageant,
sponsored by the Ephrata
Jaycees, is a preliminary to
the Miss Pennsylvania
Pageant. It provides an
opportunity for young
women to win scholarships
to further their education
and to gain opportunites to
broaden their horizons. The
pageant includes talent,
evening gown and swimsuit
competition as well as
personal interviews.
For her talent com-
petition, Gloria will present
the vocal selection ‘‘Vissi
d’Arte,” from the opera
“Tosca’’ by Puccini.
The pageant will be held on
Saturday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m.
at Ephrata high school.

The lettuce and radishes
are growing nicely, thank
you. The tomato vines are
full of ripening tomatoes.
The beets and carrots are
doing well.
But the garden itself has a
look of autumn about it! It
doesn’t look at all as if did in
June and July.
Maybe it’s the brown
cornstalks which we haven’t
cut down yet. Maybe it’s the
Hoosier dahlias blooming
profusely. Or perhaps it’s the
Romaine lettuce gone to seed
.. or the cabbage plants
minus their heads...
For whatever the reason,
the garden looks as if the
harvest time is at hand, with
the true growing season
over!
But what a season it has
been! We had ‘‘beginner’s
luck,” it seems, and have felt
amply repaid for our efforts.
We have feasted on various
plantings of lettuce and
radishes. We have long
strings of onions hung in the

Street Improvement
Program Scheduled
To Begin This Week
Mount Joy Borough’s 1974 street improvement program is
expected to get under way this week, moving toward
upgrading some 20 blocks of thoroughfare, mostly in the
Florin Ward area.
Machinery was being moved in early this week, cauncil
was told at its September meeting, held Monday night.
The program is to be
completed by October 15.
Although it also is located
in the Florin area, a

BOROUGH'S CONCERN DEEPENS
Council Visions Development Impact
A deepening concern about
the inevitable involvment
between the borough of
Mount Joy and the
residential development of
The Meadows is being felt by
Borough Council.
At its Monday night
monthly meeting, members
of the council expressed deep
concern and voiced an
urgent need for establishing
a focus upon the approaching
situation.
The Meadows, located at
the east edge of the com-
munity, along the north side
of Road 230, is slated,
ultimately, to include 780
dwelling units.
Already more and more
buildings are rising as
Phase 1 of the project gets
under way.
The beginning phase is to
include 152 units.
The borough’s concern
centers around such matters
as fire protection, police
protection, ambulance
service, water and sewer
services, water run off,
health requirements etc etc.
All have a distinct bearing
upon local facilities.
Although The Meadows is
located outside the borough,
council feels that the local
community will be deeply
involved simply because of
the closeness of the two
units.
To date, council, in its
efforts to have substantive
talks with other govern-
mental groups and the
developer on some of the
matters of concern have not
been especially productive.
Monday night, council felt
that it may need help in
establishing its position and
bringing its possible future
problems to the proper
forum.
It was pointed out that if
Mount Joy community is to
be subjected to a major
impact, which any major
housing development does
have on the immediate
NO HALLOWEEN
PARADE FOR ‘74
IN MOUNT JOY
Again, in 1974, there will be
no Halloween parade in
Mount Joy.
For many years the Lions
Club sponsored the parade of
all kinds of spooks, ghosts
and assorted spirits of the
season, assisted financially
by the community at large.
The parade was dropped
last year and a Fun Night
was substituted.
To be held at the W.L
Beahm school, the 1974 Fun
Night arrangements will be
announced later.

time to be involved in the

of methods envisioned to
handle anticipated
