Page 8 - Mount Joy Bulletin ‘Of This and That’ (Continued from Page 1) But except for the un- predictability of the schedule, we somehow find the overnight trip pleasurable. It is always interesting to watch the fellow passengers, who in- clude a wide cross-section of modern-day humanity. There were harassed young mothers, traveling alone with one or two small children, trying to keep them fed .and get them to sleep at night. There were older couples, going to visit children or grandchildren, finding their way regularly to the diner and napping frequently in between meals. There were young people with duffle bags and long hair, others neatly dressed, with conventional luggage. There were occasional businessmen, with attache cases and newspapers. Coming east from Indianapolis this time, there were two tour groups of women who had attended a week-long convention in the Hoosier capitol city. They were footsore and weary, but still full of interminable chatter and up-and-down- the-aisle activity! So — the trip is always interesting. When one is tired of watching the people, there is always the ever- changing panorama outside the train window. From the lush farmlands of Lancaster County, the picture changes to the river-level ride north along the Susquehanna, to the gorgeous mountain scenery in western Penn- sylvania, to the rolling hills of Ohio, to the perfectly flat farmlands of eastern and central Indiana, with big May 22, 1974 cities like Pittsburgh, Columbus, Dayton and Indianapolis thrown in for good measure! With all the beauty of nature, one sees also the occasional and lamentable desecration of nature by man. It is a tiring trip, and each time at its close we tell ourselves, ‘‘Never again! Next time we’ll fly!” But we never do. The trip on the train has been made by us so many times now that it has become warp and woof of our lives. So long as an overnight train runs between Lancaster and Indianapolis, we’ll probably take it! A ‘‘company picnic!”’ We had never attended one, but we were well initiated into this kind of activity on Saturday! We were graciously sent complimentary tickets by the Hanover Brands Foods company of Hanover, Pa., for its 50th anniversary party for their employees. It was held at the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg, and was a gala occasion on a gigantic scale! Some 3,000 people at- tended, and were well- rewarded for their efforts. The whole building had been transformed into a country atmosphere, complete with six tons of hay, picket fences, costumes, music, and tables with red-checkered cloths and red geraniums! There were speeches by the company president, Alan Warehime, son of the founder, and others. There was an abundance of food, from hot dogs and sauerkraut to a giant buffet, featuring fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, chow chow, pickles, assorted breads, cup cakes, a huge salad bar, and a number of ‘“‘ice cream parlors’ where children (of all ages) could make their own sundaes with a wide variety of toppings! There was a German Band, a square dance troup, and a 16-piece orchestra for dancing. There were balloons and favors for the children, door prizes, bir- thday gifts! There were pretzels by the bucketsful and peanuts in the -shell. There was an abundance of liquid refreshment! And how the people loved it! From the youngest to the oldest, they seemed to be having an absolute ‘“‘ball’’! It was a day they will long remember! MAIN STREET (Continued from Page 1) Students, promoting among themselves a ‘‘buy a brick’’ campaign, have raised $2,000 of their $3,000 goal. eb It was inevitable that something like this would happen this year. a At a time when a large number of novice gardeners are putting out vegetable plots, a lot of things can go wrong. But, who would have thought that a pair of top notch professional men with college degrees, enough between them to paper the display wall of any den, would be the ones for this. a In a partnership effort, the two have launched their gardening effort with en thusiasm.
