This is the last week George Ulrich will be
Mount Joy Borough Manager.
Friday he will clear off his desk and next
week he will become manager of Hickory
township of Mercer county.
It is a nice promotion for Ulrich, as he
pursues his career in government service as
administrator of municipal affairs.
But, in his departure from Mount Joy is a
dash of sadness for everyone in the com-
munity who is interested in good govern-
ment and operation.
During the nearly three years that Ulrich
has been manager, he has made many
friends, has demonstrated a high fidelity to
his job and has amply indicated that he is
knowledgeable and capable.
Mount Joy’s choice of its first borough
manager was an excellent one. Ulrich has
served well and effectively, his knowledge
of “when, where and how’’ to handle im-
portant affairs serving to make and to save
the community thousands of dollars.
Under his guidance and with his service,
the community has made big strides during
the past two and a half years in solving
some of its problems and in facing up to
many others.
George Ulrich’s loss to the community
will be missed on a personal basis by many
who have been associated with him both
officially and unofficially.
But, all who know him wish him well as he
takes up a bigger job in a bigger community
with bigger responsibilities.
Mount Joy will be a bit better place in
which to live and to work and to raise a
family because he has been a part of the
community for awhile.
Mr. and Mrs. Ulrich have been recipients of
numerous courtesies during the past few days, as they
and their son prepare to leave for their new home at 99
Todd Ave. Eastview Manor, Apt. B-11, Sharon, Pa.
On Wednesday, April 10, the Mount Joy Merchants’
assn. lured the couple to a surprise luncheon at the -
Mount Joy restaurant, where numerous gifts were

Set Memorial Day
Parade For
Memorial Day in Mount
Joy - 1974!
Traditionally, the date is
May 30. Under the new
system of summer holidays,
the date is May 27. But, in
Mount Joy, the big day for
WHATTA TIME!!!
Pig, Cat, Cops, Firemen
A pig and a cat, the police
and a fire company!
What do they have in
common?
- Humorous switches in
service to the public, if
nothing else, is the answer.
And, there are two short
stories to back it up.
A couple of weeks ago, one
cold and rainy night, police
were called to report ‘“‘a cat
up in a tree.” Officer Frank
Aument investigated. And,
sure enough, there was a cat
in a tree along Donegal
Springs road - crying until
you could have heard it all
the way to the Florin Fire
company headquarters.
So, that’s who was called -
the Florin Fire company.
Men and trucks arrived, red
lights flashed, search lights
located the cat in a thick
maple tree. Two rubber-
coated firemen braved the
wind, rain and scratchy
limbs. Ad everyone stomped
around, laughing, joking and
humped against the blasts of
lingering winter, the cat was
retrieved and carried
carefully down a ladder.
Monday morning, this
week, Main Street had its
Two Will Attend
“Skills Olympics”
Two Donegal high school
votech students will
represent Donegal, Lan-
caster county and Central
Pennsylvania at the VICA
state Skill Olympics, to be
held April 29 and 30 and May
1, at Seven Springs, Pa.
They are: Lorie
Shellenberger, senior, and
Ross Neiss, junior. .
May 25
celebration will be May 25.
That will be Saturday!
However, continuing the
historic way of observance,
the community is laying
plans for a ‘bigger and
better’ Memorial Day and
week-end of activities.
Among the events already
scheduled are the Saturday
afternoon parade, memorial
services, art show, swim-
ming pool opening, com-
munity chorus concert, trap
shoot, vespers in the park,
arts and crafts show,
community carnival and a
Princess pageant.
Others may be added as
the time grows nearer.
The Mount Joy Com-
munity Council, which has
sponsored the Memorial Day
Weekend for many years,
again is heading the effort
and last week letters seeking
financial support were
issued.
Over the name of James B.
Heilig, fund drive chairman,
the letter asks help. More
than $2,500 is needed.
Contributions may be
made at any of the three
Mount Joy banks.
Heilig said last week that
only one day after the letters
were mailed he had received
$200.
Authorized to ‘“‘study’’ the
possibilities, four already
have visited Phillipsburg-
Osceola high school (April
15) to see an auxiliary gym
which was built by funds
raised in that district for a
50’ x 150’ building.
Proposals for Donegal are
not firm, but an all-metal
building, possibly 50’ x 100’,
situated east of the present
gym on what is now parking
lot, has been mentioned. No
firm figures of cost are
available, but $20,000 is
talked. None of that amount
would be reimbursed by the
state.
An effort to make the
construction a ‘‘community
project’’ has been suggested.
Because it would not be
attached to the present
building, several usual
requirements of con-
structions might be
eliminated. Necessity for
water, for example, might be
by-passed in building plans.
In other business Thurs-
day:
—Warning was sounded
that a tax millage increase
may be needed to meet in-
creasing projected ‘74-'75
costs.
—The board proposes to
“name’’ the new track field.
—Dr. Thomas Ww.
O'Connor has resigned as
high school and junior high
school athletic teams doctor.
He is to be replaced by Dr.
Gratch.
—SICO was granted a
contract to furnish fuel oil
for '74-'75. There was one
other bidder.
—Sabbatical leaves were
granted Glenn N. Leib and
Mrs. Betty Lutz for next
year.
