LEGION EGG HUNT DONEGAL TAKES BIG SHARE, AGAIN ,.bL Eighth Grader At Kraybill Named Spelling Champion The 1974 Donegal School District Spelling Bee was held at the W.I. Beahm junior high school on Friday, April 5. There were twenty- seven contestants, nine from sixth grade, nine from seventh grade, and nine from eighth grade. The contestants were as follows: Richard Winey, an eighth grader at Kraybill Mennonite school, was the champion. With Joyce Peterman, a seventh grader at Beahm junior high school, who was runner up, he will represent the district in the county championships, to be held at the Abraham Lincoln Junior high school, Lan- caster, Friday, April 16. . Lisa Mummaw? a seventh grader from the W.I. Beahm Junior High School will serve as alternate and will par- ticipate in the finals if either of the winners is unable to take part. . Miss Catherine Zeller, head of the English depart- ment, Donegal high school, served as pronouncer. Judges were: Mrs. Jean Phiel, James Metzler and Anthony Ritrovato. Samuel Harnish was in charge of the program and explained the rules of the contest and in- troduced the contestants to the assembly. Other cluded: SIXTH GRADE ; Grandview - Phillip Thome and Donna Zeller; Seiler - Pam Ebersole and Gordon Brightbill; Riverview contestants in- Debbie Torres and Jeff. Joy Post 5752, Mount Veterans of Foreign Wars, - and its’ auxiliary will sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt, on Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. It will be held at the Post Home on Longenecker Road and all children in the Mount Joy area are invited. SATURDAY P.M. FOR ALL KIDDIES American Legion Post 185 will hold its annual Easter Egg Roll on Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m. on the lawn at the Mount Joy Post Home. Preceding the hunt the Sky Divers will jump at ap- proximately 1:30 p.m. The egg hunt is open for children 0-12 and prizes will be awarded to those finding lucky eggs. This program is open to all children in the community in their age brackets and there iS no charge. Mount Joy Rotary Elects Officer Slate For Year Albert Newlin, East Main street, has been elected president of the Mount Joy Rotary club for the year July 1, 1974, to June 31, 1975. He will succeed Dr. David E. Schlosser. Election was by the board of directors, which was named by the membership a week earlier. Other officers include: Carl Hallgren, first vice- president; Jay Musser, second vice-president; Dr. Richard Bryson, secretary, and Joseph Shaeffer, treasurer. The new directors include: Dr. Shlosser, Newlin, Hallgren, Dr. Bryson, Shaeffer, Musser, Lester Eshelman, Jerry Alleman, Richard Killian and Rev. Jacob Replogle. Honor Herbert Niemeyer For Volunteer Service A Mount Joy resident - Herbert Niemeyer, Richland Lane - is among those to be honored for outstanding volunteer service to ‘help The recognition comes as part of the observance of National Volunteer Recognition Week - April 21- 27. Mary Alice Heilman Wins Reserve Championship At Science Fair As in many other years, when the final count was taken, Donegal high school again, in 1974, has grabbed a huge share of honors in the Lancaster County Science Fair. This year, reserve championship honors were won by Mary Alice Heilman, 15-year- old junior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heilman, who did her project on a study of ozone, a gas similar to oxygen which is formed under magnetic condition. Her reserve championship entitles her to participate in the international Science Fair, to be held at Notre Dame university at South Bend, Ind., in May. Mary Alice, who also is very interested in art and is an accomplished violinist, joins a long list of Donegal students who have won high honors in Lancaster county and have shown their scientific exhibits at the in- physics. D.H.S. Community Good Friday Service A Good Friday Community Service for Mount Joy and vicinity will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church. The program will begin at 1 p.m. with a traditional worship service in three segments to allow wor- shippers to come and go at intervals. The congregation will share in the message through music and the spoken word. Liturgists for the service will be the Rev. Donald Whitesel and the Rev. W. Richard Kohler. The sermon of the day will be by the pastor of Trinity Church, the Rev. W. Lester Koder. Mrs. Joan Betty will offer two vocal selections during the first hour service. Miss Beulah Smith will be at the organ. Part two of the Good Friday Service will be in the form of a dramatic presentation by the Caravan Players of Lancaster. The theatrical group will per- form ‘No Name in the Street’’ by Edward Murch. This drama is an interpretation of some of the events of Holy Week. Donegal this year won 28 of the 96 honors given at the county fair, held last week at Conestoga Valley high school. That number represents approximately 30 percent of the placements and honors.
