Page 2 - Mount Joy Bulletin March 6, 1974 —EDITORIAL- Signals Of Frustration The tragedy of the recent Michigan election, in which the Republican candidate was beaten soundly, is not in the results, but in the message which is being signaled. After more than a year of Watergate, depression within inflation, gasoline shortages and other deeply disturbing episodes in the American picture, the temper of the people is not friendly. They are not friendly to government, to people in government, and are less friendly even to their neighbors. There is pure frustration! There is nothing they can do about zooming taxes on every possible front. There is nothing they can do about the price of heating oil. There is nothing they can do about the lack of gasoline or its increasing price. There is nothing they can do about the price of food or the scarcities of certain items. There are the concerns people have for some of their basic necessities - food and shelter. And, if Americans still have love affairs, it is with their automobiles. There is nothing they can do about what is happening in Washington - or in Harrisburg. There is nothing they can do on so many fronts that about the only leverage they have is the lever in the voting booth. And, it is not surprising that people sent a message to the government in Michigan. It is entirely possible that the mood of the people may change - perhaps as warm weather sees an end to the fuel need and if gasoline supplies increase by the time Spring rolls around. But, if the crunches continue into the Fall, when election time comes, there will be a lot of action taken behind those closed curtains. Certain officials who have big Republican majorities built into their constituancy will escape, but if disgusted and frustrated voters stay home in droves - as they did in Michigan - even those who have deep entrenchment may be in trouble. It is interesting to note that in Mount Joy last weekend three politicians did what may not ever have been done here before. They made arrangements and set themselves up to hear the ‘‘voice of the people’, to sit down with them and to talk, to listen to their concerns and their complaints. While the move by the borough mayor is part of his campaign promises of several months ago, the State Representative and the State Senator came because times are changing. By Martha Epler TO RULE THE NIGHT By James Irwin Published by A. J. Holman Co., 1973 the completion of the NASA debriefing sessions upon return. The latter portion of the book is biographical and covers the author’s lifetime from birth until the present. The author’s life has been to say the least, eventful. It has been packed with ex- citement and adventure, but has not been without mishaps or heartache. Jim Irwin has, among other things, suffered the failure of a first marriage, a near-fatal plane crash, and a heart attack. However, the author testifies that each and every event of his life has occurred for a purpose -- previden- tially. Probably the most en- thralling and captivating portion of the book is the author’s account of the Apollo 15 flight. Irwin covers practically every aspect of the flight---from many technical considerations to the mode of satisfying such “creature comforts’ as food and sleep. He describes his encounter with the sometimes helpless feeling of weighlessness. But it is when the author begins to describe his ex- perience on the face of the moon that we feel the truly dramatic impact of his message. He relates that there were breathtaking and exhilarating sensations caused by the moon's physical grandeurs. However, more specifically, he writes, ‘I felt an over- whelming sense of the presence of God on the moon. I felt His spirit more closely than I have ever felt it here on the earth, right there beside me---it was amazing.” Irwin recounts how he was spiritually moved to the extent that he felt a desire to hold religious services amid the splendor of’ the lunar landscape. He was moved to quote thusly, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the Lord from whence cometh my help.” (Continued on Page 7) * Letter To Editor x The Bulletin Box 86 Mount Joy, Pennsylvania Dear Sir: I am enclosing my check to cover a 2 year renewal of my subscription to the Bulletin. It is the only warm living object that we saw in space on our flight to the moon.” This statement is a fragment of the reactions and observations of former astronaut James Irwin, one of the few privileged men who has “walked the moon.” Irwin's book ‘“To Rule The Night,” relates the story of his incredible voyage to the moon. The author also tells how he encountered a spiritual voyage that led him to a new understanding of our beloved Earth, of himself, and of God. The book is separated into two distinct parts. The first describes the actual journey to the moon---from the morning of the blast off to Jack Robinson can get a loan from us as fast as he can sign Jack Robinson. So can you.
