TERRA September 19, 1973 Mount Joy Bulletin - Page 3 Two Of Three Braves Teams Win From Host St. Joe Clubs The Donegal Braves Midget Football ‘“‘B” team opened league play with a 17-6 win over St. Joe on the loser’s field on Sunday, Sept. 16. Eichler, Mark Smedley and the Butz boys--Joe and Steve--, came up with the big play when it was needed to stop a St. Joe drive. Donegal made several fumble recoveries and Scott Jones in- tercepted a pass as the defense made its presence felt. In the third quarter Mark Smedley tackled a St. Joe runner in the end zone for a safety and Donegal led, 10-0. In the fourth, Ney scored on a one-yard plunge. Jones scored the point after and the score read 17-0. St. Joe finally got on the board late in the game. The “A” team didn’t fair as well, dropping a 26-0 decision. St. Joe scored on the first play from scrimmage on a charge up the sidelines and Donegal was never able to recover. The defense, led by Scott Mowrer, Mark Divet, Randy Derr and Carl Gohn, was hard-pressed as St. Joe moved the ball well against Donegal. Mitch Johnson was also kept busy punting as penalties and fumbles stymied the offense. Doug Hopwood, Todd Richards and Mowrer spearheaded what of- fense Donegal was able to muster, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. They'll get them next week. The “C”’ team got the Braves back on the winning track with a convincing, 19-0, whitewash of St. Joe. Donegal scored the first time it had its hands on the ball as Steve Mezaros scampered 14 ‘yards for the score and a 6-0 lead. The balance of the first half was a defensive battle with Frank Brommer spending most of his time in the St. Joe backfield. If the St. Joe runner was able to get by Brommer he was met at the line by Joe Althoff, Cory Heisey or Jeff Duke, with Jeff Kauffman and Ron Kennedy thrown in for good measure. Allan White then took the second-half kickoff right up the middle for 70 yards and a quick score. Mezaros squiggled through the line for the point after and Donegal led 13-0. Again in the third quarter, Mezaros broke several tackles in a twisting, spinning 32 yard run for another score and Donegal upped its margin to 19-0, and that is where it ended. : Sunday, the 23rd, Donegal hosts Manor Ridge at the DHS field. First game, kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ‘Sugar’ is derived from the Sanskrit sarkara.
