Busy Week At District Playgrounds
A Mask Show, Costume Show,
Balloon Bust and Hobby Show
highlighted the activities at the
Mount Joy playground this past
week. These shows presented
much competition and ex-
citement.
Winners of the Mask Show held
Monday morming were: most
unusual-Angie Krahner, most
colorful-Jay Ulrich, ugliest-
Byron Ruhl, cutest-Billy Hall,
most realistic-Wendy Germer,
and saddest-Colette and Fawn
Cornwell.
Many different kinds of
animals and people were at the
playground for the Costume Show
Wednesday afternoon. Winners
included: prettiest-Maxine
Maxwell, ugliest-Laura Markly
and Jayne Beaver, most original-
Billy Hall, most colorful-Amy
Westerman, most unusual-Cindy
Ruhl, cutest-Colette and Fawn
Cornwell, and most comical-
Shelley Brown.
The Balloon Bust was run
according to age categories.
Beginners’ winner was Angie
Krahner. Other categories and
winners were: intermediates-
Wendy Germor, and seniors-
Donna Sherk.
Hobbies were popular Friday
afternoon. We had anything from
dolls to cakes. Winners of this
event were: largest collection -
Wendy Germer, most
educational - Tom Beaver, nicest
display - Maxine Maxwell, and
most unusal - Billy Hall.
Friday was also Pizza Day. The
playground received their pizzas
and went out delivering them.
The deliveries took al! morning.
Other activities last week in-
cluded: baseball, nok-hockey.
kick ball, and softball.
Next week's activities include:
a Bicycle Show, Peanut
Scramble, Indian Day, Capture
the Flag and making cup and
saucer people.
FLORIN PLAYGROUND
This week, beginner swimming
lessons started for the Florin
playground. Fifty-six children
are enrolled in the program.
During the swimming lessons,
the seniors have been preparing
for the carnival, which will be
held on Tuesday, July 31. Many
businesses throughout the Mount
Joy area have contributed items
for the booths. The children are
making items out of gimp for the
arts and crafts display.
A hobby show was held on
Wednesday morning. The win-
ners were: Phil Peters-Most
Realistic; Mark Peters-Most
Unusual; Nicest Display-Kim
Gainer, (first) Terry Berg,
(second) Robin Wittel, (third).
On Wednesday afternoon the
intermediates and seniors lost a
hard fought volleyball game
against Marietta.
Thursday afternoon a stuffed
animal show was held. Twenty-
five pegple participated in it. The
winners were: Oldest-Phil
Peters, (first) Mark Peters,

Another week of playground
has passed with lots of activity
and fun. During the week of July

Friday, July 20, the Maytown
intermediate boys defeated the
Florin intermediate boys in a
close game of kickball with the
final score of 14-13.
For crafts, the children
finished making and painting
molds that they began the week
before. Some of the future crafts
planned are pipe cleaners, and
gimp.
The week of July 23 will be the
second week for beginner
swimming. The first week there
was a turn-out of between 45-65
children each day for the
swimming lessons. Advanced
Beginner and Intermediate
swimming begin August 30.
MARIETTA PLAYGROUND
Last week Marietta
Playground held its 4th week of
sessions.
The week began with swim-
ming lessons for advanced
beginners, intermediates, and
swimmers. Also, the weekly free
swim was held on Monday af-
ternoon.
Arts and crafts sessions were
held at different times
throughout the week. Popsicle
stick crafts were the projects for
the week.
The week was ended on Friday
afternoon with a Bingo game and
peanut scramble.
PLAYGROUND MUSIC NOTES
The summer instrumental
music program of the Donegal
School District has been main-
taining a fine attendance.
Enrollment has increased each
week. Many students are
preparing tryout numbers for
District Band. Some are
beginners, some are striving for
technical improvement. The
course in theory has proved to be
quite popular and many students
have accomplished much in the
four weeks of instruction.
The course is offered at four
schools; Maytown Elementary,
Riverview Elementary, Grand-
view Elementary, and W. O.
Beahm Junior High.

The Mount Joy playground
again was busy this past week.
There were two shows, arts and
crafts, and much baseball.
The Hat Show and the Stuffed
Animal Show proved a real
challenge for the judges. There
were many entries for both
events.
Winners of the Hat Show, held
Tuesday morning, July 10, were:
fanciest-Maxine Maxwell; most
clever idea-Angie Krahner, and
most realistic-Shelley Brown.
Stuffed Animals are very
popular among the playground
members. A large variety of
them were at the playground
Thursday afternoon. Winners
were: largest: Carol Fackler;
smallest-Donna Sherk; most
cuddly-Scott Hoover; most
unusual-Billy Brown, most
realistic-Annette Haas; cutest-
Emily Zuch; most talkative-Al
Anspach; curliest-Lisa Ruhl, and
most hair-Sugar Ruhl.
The making of masks has been
completed, except for the
judging. Because so much work
was put into them, there will be a
contest and points will be given.
This weeks, arts and crafts will
be making and decorating
wastebaskets, using old chip and
pretzel cartons.
Baseball is the most popular
sport. Florin and Mount Joy had
a game Thursday afternoon.
Another game enjoyed by all was
Capture the Flag.
Along with all the other ac-
tivities, the playground has been
selling pizzas for two weeks.
In addition to the Mask Show,
other activities planned for the
week include: a Costume Show
using the masks, a Balloon Bust,
and a Hobby Show.
FLORIN
“Around the World” week at
the Florin playground, July 9-13.
On Tuesday, ‘‘African Day”
was celebrated. All the children
were invited to bring their wild
animals to a pet show. Winners
were: Most Unusual Pet-Jim

Day”. A costume contest was

(first) Kim Gainer, (third) Lisa

“Mexican Day’’ was held on
Thursday. A pinata was made
and filled with candy. Each child
was blindfolded and given a
chance to break it open. The
intermediates held a baseball
game with the Mount Joy
playground.

The score of the first game was 5-
1, goals scored by Mic Reidy,
Tiny Musser, both with 2 goals
and Bob Blake with one goal. The
socre of the second game was 14-0
with Jay Long scoring 4 goals,
Mark Presnell with 5 goals, Greg
Lindemuth with 3 goals, and Jeff
Sheetz and Randy Houseal each
with one goal.
For Arts and Crafts, the
children made molds out of
plaster of paris and painted the
molds with lots of creativity.
Some of the coming events for
the Maytown playground are
swimming lessons, whch begin
July 16 for the beginners, and
July 30 for advanced beginners
and intermediates.
MUSIC NOTES
The enrollment in the in-
strumental music program of the
Donegal playground project has
now reached 228. The music
theory course that is being of-
fered this year, as an elective,
has proved to be quite popular.
Many of the students have chosen
to study theory and are making
good progress.
Two names were missed from
the list of musicians in the
Instrumental Music Honor Clubs.
Scott Stauffer and Gordon
Brightbill, both Seiler School
students, also are members of the
100 Club.
