TEENAGE PREGNANCY Teenage mothers run greater risks of having premature babies, says James E. Van Horn, Extension family life speicalist at Penn State. Many girls under the age of 18 are not physically mature enough to carry a baby- for 9 months and deliver it nor- mally. They are more apt to give birth to an underweight or premature baby in which there is a higher death risk. Early prenatal care may help prevent low birth weight or prematurity. This is why it is important for women to seek a doctor if she even thinks she may be pregnant.
