EMPATHY
The wise Indian said, “Do
not judge your enemy until
you have walked in his moc-
casins for many moons.” The
ability to participate in an-
other’s attitudes, thoughts, &
feelings is known as ‘‘empa-
thy”, and is a characteristic
of those who have a genuine
regard for other people. Thus
they are able to see another
as he really is — neither an
angel nor a devil, but just a
fellow human being caught
up in a particular set of life
circumstances and in great
need of understanding.
SCIENCE
It is strange in our world
today how science is praised
and blamed, torn down and
bulit up. This is probably due
to the fact that science gave
us the atomic bomb. However
it is also a fact that tens of
thousands of children are
alive and whole, instead of
being badly ecripoled, because
of a scientist named Dr. Salk
Science in its purest form re-
searches with controlled ex-
periments until empirical
knowledge is obtained. You
can make better decisions by
adequate research than by

DARING
Some people seem called
upon to live daring lives. Rac-
ing drivers, movie stunt men
and women, or circus perfor-
mers constantly risk their
lives in performing their jobs.
One trapeze artist,, asked how
he accomplished his daring
feats, said, “I just throw my
mind over, and my body fol-
lows.” Now, with astronauts
circling the earth and moon,
one wonders what kind of
person dares to do such things
The answer seems to be that
it is the person whose sense
of accomplishment is more
important to him than the
risk, so he dares to move for-
ward.
REBELS STOPPED
On June 29, 1862, General
McClellan stopped the Confed-
erate advance at Savage Sta-
tion.

BIG, CLEAN, QUIET
Although the Fosi ng 747 (ton) ushered in the age ofv irtually smoke-free
and ¢ uieter engines, the new L-10i1 (bottom) goes a step better. Al-
though each of the L-1011’s three engines generates 42,000 pounds « £
thrust at take-off, it is the quic test commercial jet flyi ing. E .ngine smoke?

“Airplanes have always been built for efficiency and passenger
comfort,” a Trans World Airlines executive said recentiv. “No
environmental acceptability is another major factor and we have
an airplane that is nearly per-
fect. It’s the L-1011.” wTWA.
The airline industry has TWA introduced the big
been one of the most responsive plane as part of its expanding
when it comes to improving
technological and environ-
mental harmony. The carriers
have spent millions of dollars
re-fitting their older jet engines
with special smoke-reduction
devices.
Smoke emission from the
rew TWA L-1011 is practical-
1; non-existent.
~ Powered by three Rolls-
Joyce engines, the L-1011 is
60 to 75 percent less annoying
to the human ear around air-
ports than the more familiar
four-engine, narrow body-jets.
‘The Federal Aviation Ad-
ministration lists three noise
level criteria for new jet air-
craft, and the L.-1011 is quieter
on all three counts, according

the line’’ service. Inside the
L-1011, passengers will find
aisles on both sides of the
plane, lounges in coach and
first class, carry-on baggage
compar tments and two-a nd-

seats swivel to form foursomes
